Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. The average life expectancy is increasing and this disease arise associated with aging, which is worrying. To achieve an early and accurate diagnosis of this disease is necessary to optimize the methods of detection. The signal analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG) may reveal structural and functional disability associated with AD. Therefore, this work aimed at the analysis of spontaneous EEGs activity of patients diagnosed with probable AD and a control group, using different spectral parameters, as well as the creation of a system based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in order to discriminate the EEG signals, among patients with AD and control subjects. Three different methodologies and variations were applied, depending on the type of signal processing applied. The EEG recording analisys was performed using the Power Spectral Density (PSD) function based on Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT), the PSD based on Wavelet Transform (WT) and the application of Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The PSD obtained by WT was presented in this work as a pioneer technique in the EEG signal processing and achieve better results than those obtained by traditional techniques, such as the PSD based on STFT and DWT. The best classification was performed by the ANN using PSD of WT Biorthogonal 3.5 with 0.97 of AROC , 92.1% of sensitivity, 90.8% of specificity and 91.5% of accuracy.
