Este trabalho tem por base a tradução de histórias do livro Her wits about her: Self-Defence Success Stories by Women. Nele refletimos sobre as questões culturais, o papel do tradutor e do público-alvo, e sobre a tradução como transmissora de conhecimento. O tradutor surge como tridimensional, por ser leitor, criador e crítico. Consequentemente, deve adquirir conhecimentos e experiência úteis para a resolução de problemas que surgem ao longo do processo de tradução. Analisámos alguns, principalmente relacionados com diferenças linguísticas e culturais entre o Inglês e o Português, nomeadamente sobre a questão de género. No final, pedimos a leitores para nos darem o seu parecer sobre a tradução. Com base nos seus comentários, fizemos alguns melhoramentos, porque gostaríamos que os leitores sentissem empatia com o texto, através do qual pretendemos partilhar conhecimento, de forma a tornar as mulheres mais conscientes das suas capacidades, por forma a reagir perante um ataque; ABSTRACT: The basis of this work is the translation of Her wits about her: Self-Defence Success Stories by Women. We considered cultural issues, the role of the translator and the target reader, and of translation as a vehicle for knowledge. The translator appears as a tridimensional figure: s/he is a reader, a creator and a critic. Therefore, s/he should acquire useful knowledge and experience to solve the problems s/he may encounter in the process of translation. We analyzed some of these problems, focusing on language and cultural differences between English and Portuguese, namely the gender issue. Finally, based on comments from a sample of readers regarding the translation, we revised it, in an effort to reinforce readers’ empathy with the text, which is crucial, given that it aims to share knowledge, in order to make women more conscious of their abilities and enable them to react in case of attack.
