O principal objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado será o de abordar a questão da diferença e da diversidade no mundo de hoje, atravessado que está por clivagens de índole religiosa, socioeconómica, político-cultural, que condicionam as relações entre estados, povos e culturas. Tem na sua base a obra do conceituado ensaísta e romancista de origem árabe, Amin Maalouf. As relações internacionais são condicionadas por uma série de fatores que acabam por implicar e determinar o destino de milhões de habitantes, ou que pelo menos têm implicações no seu quotidiano. Fatores como o poder, cultura, riqueza, recursos naturais podem influenciar esse tipo de relações. A questão da diversidade e da diferença surge como sendo fundamental e o pano de fundo das relações políticas formais entre unidades políticas. Muitos dos conflitos, violações dos direitos humanos, e inflexões conjunturais são condicionados pelo fator diversidade. A dicotomia, e antagonismo, entre ocidente e oriente está na ordem do dia, sobretudo desde os ataques de 11 de Setembro. As sucessivas acusações do ocidente às violações dos direitos humanos, os conflitos e ódio entre as duas “civilizações” têm sido constantemente atiçadas nos últimos anos. Isso verifica-se, em grande medida, porque o mundo se vê afetado pela intolerância e incompreensão pela diferença, tornando-se realmente evidente que a diversidade e o fator multiculturalismo devem ser utilizados para explicar e compreender a situação. Amin Maalouf, um autor contemporâneo, oferece-nos uma obra complexa e rica em informações, valores, costumes, sentimentos, crenças, e atitudes que permitem uma compreensão mais sensível e que permitem conceber o outro lado da história, em culturas que nos são tão próximas e tão distantes como o Médio Oriente, África e Mediterrâneo. O objetivo da dissertação será o de avaliar o sentido e os limites da obra do escritor, pensando com ele e contra ele, examinando o seu valioso contributo para uma diversidade harmoniosa de civilizações; ABSTRACT: The main objective of this dissertation is to address the issue of diversity in today's world, which is crossed by serious conflicts due to religious, socioeconomic, political and cultural, which determine the relations between states, peoples and cultures. For such purpose this research has it’s basis in the work of the renowned essayist and novelist of Arab origin, Amin Maalouf. International relations are conditioned by a number of factors that ultimately involve and determine the fate of millions, or at least have implications in their daily lives. Factors such as power, culture, wealth and natural resources can influence such relationships. The issue of diversity and difference arises as fundamental backdrop of formal political relations between political units. Many of the conflicts, human rights violations, and structural problems in politics are conditioned by diversity factor. The dichotomy and antagonism between East and West is on the agenda, especially since the attacks of 11 September. The successive objections from Western to the human rights violations, conflict and hatred between the two "civilizations" have been heightened in recent years. This occurs largely because the world is affected by intolerance and misunderstanding the differences, making it really clear that diversity and multiculturalism factor should be used to explain and understand the situation. Amin Maalouf, a contemporary author, offers us a complex and rich information, values, customs, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes that enable a more sensitive and allowing to conceive the other side of history, in cultures that are so near and so far away as the Middle East, Africa and Mediterranean. The aim of the dissertation is to evaluate the meaning and limits of the writer's work, thinking with him and against him, examining his valuable contribution to a harmonious diversity of civilizations.
