As alterações estruturais ocorridas no sistema financeiro português, após a adesão do nosso país à Comunidade Económica Europeia, vieram a limitar o potencial de crescimento das instituições financeiras por via orgânica e acentuar a sua vulnerabilidade estratégica e competitiva, perante processos de concentração noutros países europeus. A concentração bancária foi uma reação natural do mercado ao fenómeno da globalização dos mercados financeiros, originada pela Iiberdade de circulação de capitais e conjugada com a desintermediação dos mercados financeiros e sua desregulamentação. Esta dissertação propõe-se analisar o grau de concentração bancária em Portugal na década de 90 e os efeitos da concentração no desempenho dos grupos financeiros. Estes processos de fusões e aquisições da era da liberalização financeira iniciaram-se com as reprivatizações 1989, de modo que mais de 15 anos depois é altura de analisar o desempenho económico dos principais grupos financeiros portugueses criados após as concentrações ocorridas. /ABSTRACT - The structural transformations in the Portuguese financial system, after the adhesion of our country to the European Economic Community, had come to limit the potential of growth of the financial institutions for organic way and to accent its strategic and competitive vulnerability, in front processes of concentration in other european countries. The banking concentration was a natural reaction of the market to the globalization of the financial markets, started for the freedom of circulation of capitals and conjugated with the disintermediation of the financial markets and its deregulation. This work is a proposal to analyze the degree of banking concentration in Portugal in the decade of the 90 and the effects of the concentration in the performance of the financial groups. These processes of merger and acquisitions of the age of the financial liberalization had been initiated with privatizations of 1989, and so more than 15 years later is the time to analyze the economic performance of the main portuguese financial groups created after occurred concentrations.
