/ABSTRACT - This thesis deals with what is known as the first Spanish grammar published in Portugal - Grammatica Hespanhola para uso dos Partuguezes (Porto, Typographia Commercial, 1848), by Nicolau Peixoto. It is a critical edition of the above-mentioned work, establishing a comparison with the only known later edition (Lisboa, Typographia de Maria da Madre de Deus, 1858), by José Peixoto, who adds to the original text Vocabulário Hespanhol e Partuguez and Phrases Familiares, two apendixes probably the only ones of their kind ever published in Portugal. In the introduction, we present biobibliographical information about the editors, situating the Grammatica in their production. We then attempt to place it historiographically in the Spanish language acquisition in Portugal and comment on the work’s structure and sources. We also identify publishing motivations, analyzing its grammar theory and methodological assumptions. Finally, we comment on the Jose Peixoto’s annexes and discuss some crucial matters of textual criticism.
