O conceito de limite é o grande pilar na fundamentação do Cálculo, uma vez que para definir derivada, continuidade, integral, convergência e divergência, utilizamos esse conceito.A sistematização lógica do Cálculo pressupõe então o conceito de limite. Por muitos séculos, a noção de limite foi confundida com ideias vagas, às vezes filosóficas relativas ao infinito - números infinitamente grandes ou infinitamente pequenos - e com intuições geométricas subjetivas, nem sempre rigorosas. O termo limite no sentido moderno é produto dos séculos XVIII e XIX, originário da Europa. A definição moderna tem menos de 150 anos. Nesse trabalho estudamos como a noção de limite foi alterada no decorrer do tempo e como isso influenciou o desenvolvimento da matemática. Propomos também uma atividade exploratória cujo intuito é apresentar aos alunos do ensino básico as ideias intuitivas do conceito de limite e uma demonstração da fórmula da área do cı́rculo, objetivando promover o interesse e a curiosidade dos alunos com o uso de um material concreto, buscando assim, tornar a aprendizagem mais acessı́vel e agradável.

The concept of limit is the great pillar in the reasoning of Calculus, since to define derivative, integral, convergence and divergence we use this concept.The logical systematization of Calculus then presupposes the concept of limit. For many centuries, the notion of limit has been confused with vague, sometimes philosophical, ideas concerning the infinity – infinitely large or infinitely small numbers – and with subjective, not always rigorous, geometric intuitions. The term limit in the modern sense is a product of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, originating in Europe. The modern definition is less than 150 years old. In this work we study how the notion of limit was changed over time and how it influenced the development of mathematics. We also propose an exploratory activity whose purpose is to present to the students of elementary education the intuitive ideas of the concept of limit and a demonstration of the formula of the area of the circle, aiming to promote the interest and curiosity of the students with the use of a concrete material, thus seeking to make learning more accessible and enjoyable.
