The population of the Diocese Miranda in 1761

In 1761, the Bishop of Miranda, Dom Frei Aleixo de Miranda Henriques, considering the age of the diocesan constitutions of Miranda (1565), decided to make a Diocesan Synod, whose Constitutions were accepted in the middle of the same year by the chapter and the diocesan clergy and confirmed by provision on December 10th. Although they have never been printed or entered into force, these Constitutions include an Appendix with the population of the city of Miranda and all the parish churches that were part of this diocese. In the present work, after doing a critical analysis of the source, we present the population of Miranda diocese in 1761 – houses and “souls” (individuals) – together with the reconstitution of its total population and its distribution in terms of urban and rural population.

Em 1761, o bispo da diocese de Miranda, Dom Frei Aleixo de Miranda Henriques, tendo em consideração a antiguidade das Constituições Diocesanas de Miranda (1565), decidiu fazer um Sínodo Diocesano, cujas Constituições foram aceites em meados do mesmo ano pelos procuradores do cabido e clero diocesano e confirmadas em provisão de 10 de dezembro seguinte. Embora nunca tenham sido impressas nem entrado em vigor, estas Constituições têm a particularidade de, em apêndice, nos fornecerem a população da cidade de Miranda e de todas as igrejas paroquiais que integravam a sua diocese. Assim, no presente trabalho, após fazermos a análise crítica da fonte, apresentaremos a população da diocese de Miranda em 1761 – fogos e almas –, a reconstituição da sua população total e a distribuição da mesma quanto à população urbana e população rural.
