EN12 mais conhecida como Estrada da Circunvalação é uma estrada que delimita a cidade do Porto na zona norte e este. Concluída no final do século XIX foi, originalmente, construída com o objetivo de controlar a entrada de mercadorias na cidade do Porto, uma vez que, para se entrar na cidade era necessário pagar uma taxa. Em 1943 as portagens foram suprimidas e tornou-se no que é hoje: uma estrada para retirar grande parte do trânsito do centro da cidade do Porto e facilitar o acesso aos concelhos circundantes. A problemática deste projeto é compreender de que forma a Estrada da Circunvalação transformou a paisagem. Desta estrada nasceram várias estradas nacionais que faziam ligação com o norte do país, como por exemplo a EN13, EN14 ou a EN15. Deste modo, a estrada tornou-se numa prioridade nacional, mas, actualmente, perdeu grande parte dessa importância, passando a estar categorizada como “desclassificada”. Apesar de ter perdido alguma relevância, a EN12 continua a ter grande circulação automóvel, tornando-a, desta forma num ponto de atração para a construção de prédios de habitação, comércio, lazer e serviços. O projeto EN12 incide paralelamente sobre a transformação e a intervenção das pessoas na paisagem da Estrada Circunvalação e de que forma as pessoas se relacionam com essa intervenção e transformação da paisagem. Este projeto assenta assim nas seguintes questões: explorar a representação; a relação entre o homem e a paisagem e a respetiva transformação e intervenção que advém dessa relação, explorando-se ainda a relação entre espaço e o lugar.
EN12 better Known as Estrada da Circunvalação (Ring Road), is the road that defines the limits of the city of Porto, particularly in the north and east areas. Built in the late nineteen century, the EN12 was modified at the end of the twentieth century, and was originally built with the purpose of being a barrier for the collection of custom duties (for those wishing to bring goods into the city). After 1943, the collection of fees was suspended and the EN12 became what it is now: a road to divert traffic away from Porto city center and to facilitate access to the surrounding counties. The main question of this project is to understand the way that the ring road has transformed the landscape. From this road is born a number of different, national, roads that connect with the north of Portugal; roads like EN13, EN14 or EN15. Thus, the road becomes something of a national priority, whereas, in actuality, these road lost their importance, becoming categorized as “disqualified”. Despite this official loss of status, EN12 still has a wide automobile circulation, making it, a point of attraction for construction of buildings, commerce, leisure and services. The project EN12 aims to focus on the transformation and intervention of people in the landscape of the Ring Road and in what way they relate with that same intervention. This project is based on the following issues: exploring the representations; the relation between landscape and man, and the transformation that becomes from that relationship: The project also intends to explore the relation between space and place.
