Description

INTRODUCTION: With a view to strengthen the protection factors related to healthy lifestyles, the nurses participate in health promotion and prevention of risk behaviors, particularly those related to violence. Thus, as part of the study about dating violence and gender self-concept, we developed a quantitative analysis for the validation of the scale, "Inventory of schemes of Gender Self-Conception" (IEGA), Giavoni and Tamayo (2000). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The validation process of IEGA began with the analysis of the original scale. The data derive from a sample of 464 college students. We performed an oblique factor analysis forced to the six factors, in line with the possible dimensions of the scale. AIM/PURPOSE : to know the perception that each individual has of itself, having regard to the social constructs of femininity and masculinity. RESULTS: The results in the study, taking into account the scale items and the validity of the variables that constitute each factor, will be in a structure with six factors. The analysis of internal consistency was made by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The Alpha range in overall (78 items) is 0.881. The factorial solution found so it is satisfactory, both from a statistical viewpoint, both in terms of meaning. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the methodology used and results obtained in the validation of IEGA, we conclude that this scale has adequate psychometric properties. The joint treatment of gender self-conception, finished with a dichotomous view of masculinity and femininity, which means that masculine and feminine attributes are no longer assumed to be mutually exclusive and may occur simultaneously in the same person.
