A legalização da interrupção voluntária da gravidez (IVG) em 2007 permite, pela primeira vez, conhecer a evolução do aborto induzido em Portugal, com base em dados fiáveis. Registos de dados administrativos individuais das mulheres que realizaram uma IVG, entre 2008 e 2013, constituem a base para analisar a evolução do uso do aborto nos primeiros anos da sua descriminalização. A ideia fundamental de pesquisa neste trabalho é que o aborto evolui em estreita associação com o comportamento da fecundidade pela mediação de uma existente norma reprodutiva ou pela pressão que esta exerce sobre a decisão de abortar. A relação entre aborto e fecundidade, em Portugal, é analisada com base em características sociodemográficas das mulheres como a idade, o estado civil, a situação conjugal, a situação laboral, a escolaridade e a nacionalidade. Para além disso, a articulação entre o recurso à IVG e o número de filhos já nascidos apresenta-se como um ponto-chave para o estudo da atual relação entre aborto e regulação da fecundidade.
The legalization of induced abortion in 2007 allows, for the first time, to trace the evolution of abortion in Portugal upon reliable data. Administrative data records from individual women who performed induced abortion, between 2008 and 2013, constitute the basis to analyze the evolution of the use of abortion, in the first years of its decriminalization. The main research idea of this work is that recourse to abortion evolves in close articulation with fertility trends, by the mediation of an existing reproductive norm or by the pressure it exerts on the decision to abort. The relationship between abortion and fertility in Portugal is analyzed based on women’s socio-demographic characteristics as age, marital status, education, employment and nationality. Furthermore, the link between the use of induced abortion and the number of children already born is a key point for the study of the current relationship between abortion and fertility regulation.
