Esta investigação pretende contribuir para o entendimento de uma realidade que parece estar em crescimento nas sociedades contemporâneas: as mulheres que não querem ter filhos. Por que é que não querem ter filhos? Como encaram a maternidade? Como lidam com este projecto numa sociedade onde o modelo de família assenta na conjugalidade e na parentalidade? Os projectos de não-maternidade e a diversidade de razões e circunstâncias que determinam esta decisão constituem o objecto em análise. A partir de seis entrevistas semi-estruturadas a mulheres entre os 30 e os 40 anos - fase da vida em que a grande maioria das mulheres portuguesas já fez a transição para a maternidade, pelo que se espera que a decisão de não ter filhos já seja o resultado de uma reflexão amadurecida - e da análise de conteúdo destas narrativas, procura-se um conhecimento mais aprofundado das motivações que levam a esta opção, bem como dos contextos sociais e familiares onde se dá a construção deste projecto de vida. Conclui-se que esta escolha pode ter lugar em percursos familiares, profissionais e conjugais distintos. Algumas entrevistadas consideram a opção irreversível, na medida em que desde cedo deram conta que não são dotadas naturalmente para a maternidade, enquanto outras apontam razões que materializam a concepção de que ter filhos implica reunir condições que elas não têm nem perspectivam ter: estabilidade emocional ou profissional, disponibilidade para abdicar de tempo pessoal; o companheiro certo. Trata-se de uma opção que se foi desenhando no tempo e com as circunstâncias.
This research intends to contribute to the knowledge of a reality that seems to be growing in modern societies: the women that do not want to have children. Why these women do not want to have children? How do they perceive motherhood? How do they scope with this project in a society where family models stand on conjugality and parenthood? The childfree projects, as well as the reasons and circumstances that determine this decision constitute our analytical object. Based on semi-structured interviews to six women aged between 30 and 40 - stage of life in which the vast majority of Portuguese women already made the transition to motherhood, so it is expected that the childfree decision is the result of a matured reflection – and on the content analysis of these narratives, the aim it to accomplish a deeper understanding of the motivations behind this option, as well as the social and family contexts from which a childfree project can emerge. We conclude that this choice can take place in different family, professional and conjugal trajectories. Some interviewees present their choice as irreversible, due to the fact that they always knew that they are not naturally gifted for motherhood, while others consider that that having children implies to gather conditions that they don‟t have or expect to have in the future: emotional and professional stability; availability to abdicate from personal time, the right partner. This is a choice that has been designed during time and according to circumstances.
