A cannabis permanece como a subst?ncia il?cita mais consumida no mundo. Defendida por uns e ?diabolizada? por outros, constitui uma das subst?ncias psicoactivas mais pol?micas. Alguns autores destacaram j?, a import?ncia do estudo das representa??es sociais das subst?ncias psicoactivas. No entanto, desconhecem-se investiga??es que abordem a representa??o social desta subst?ncia num espa?o rural. S?o objectivos deste estudo: 1) conhecer as representa??es sociais da cannabis no que diz respeito ? subst?ncia, ao consumidor e ao contexto da utiliza??o, 2) identificar as diferen?as existentes entre utilizadores e n?o utilizadores desta subst?ncia da amostra em estudo. Para concretizar estes objectivos, foi realizado um estudo qualitativo que recorreu a uma dupla abordagem etno-metodol?gica e fenomenol?gica. Foram realizadas 30 entrevistas a indiv?duos residentes nas duas maiores freguesias do concelho de G?is que, depois de transcritas, foram objecto de an?lise de conte?do. No espa?o rural considerado, a cannabis ? maioritariamente representada como uma ?droga?, indutora de uma sensa??o de mal-estar e causadora de depend?ncia. Para os participantes o utilizador ? percebido como detentor de caracter?sticas de personalidade negativas, que o induzem ao consumo. Relativamente ao eixo espacial, o espa?o rural, e mais especificamente o concelho de G?is ? representado como local de consumo e de produ??o da cannabis herb?cea. H? uma distin??o clara entre a representa??o social dos participantes que n?o utilizam a subst?ncia e os que utilizam. O ?ltimo grupo representa-a como uma ?droga leve?, e mostra-se esclarecido sobre as poss?veis consequ?ncias da sua utiliza??o. Neste grupo ? ainda evidente a valoriza??o da cannabis herb?cea, em detrimento dos seus derivados. /
Cannabis is nowadays the most consumed illegal substance in the world. Endorsed by some and criticized by others, its use keeps on being a rather controversial issue. Several authors highlight the importance of studying the social representation of this psychoactive substance. However, to this day there aren?t to our knowledge any studies on this subject conducted in rural communities. This study has a double goal: 1) to understand the social representation of cannabis focusing in 3 categories of analysis - substance, user and context of use; 2) to identify the differences between the users and non users of the studied sample To achieve such goals, a qualitative research with a double phenomenological and ethnomethodological design was undertaken. Semi-structured interviews were applied to 30 participants from G?is selected for the study. After the content analyses carried out on the material, data revealed that cannabis is mainly represented as a ?drug? causing dependence. Among the participants, the user is perceived as someone with negative personality characteristics that cause him the urge to use the substance. In what concerns the spatial dimension, the rural space and more specifically G?is, is mainly represented as a place of production and use of the herbaceous form of cannabis. There is also a clear distinction of the social representation between users and non users of cannabis in this community. In fact, the former group sees cannabis as a ?soft drug? further considering that they are well aware of the consequences of its use. Also among the subjects of this group there is a distinctive appraisal of the herbaceous form of cannabis, relative to its end products.
