Description
ABSTRACT: Purpose: The Defense Mechanism Rating Scale (DMRS) (Perry, 1990) was developed to help clinicians identify defense mechanisms in the psychotherapeutic context. DMRS is one of the main empirical scales used to evaluate defense mechanisms, yet no empirical reviews have been conducted to study the scope of this instrument. Method: Relevant literature was identified via electronic searches using the search terms Defense Mechanism Rating Scale* and Overall Defensive Functioning in the following databases: PsycInfo, PsycARTICLES, PEP, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, Academic Search Complete, ISI, Wiley Online Library and Ovid. An additional search was conducted to examine the bibliographies of all collected articles. Results: 55 empirical studies using the DMRS were selected in various psychotherapeutic modalities and with different methodologies. Conclusions: The DMRS is a robust instrument of defense mechanism assessment. The findings of the DMRS support several psychoanalytic theories about the relationship between defensive functioning and the subjects of personality and affective disorders, interpretation and therapeutic alliance, conflict, and the different types of psychotherapy.
