O participante desta investigação tem 74 anos, é do sexo masculino, solteiro, internado, com o diagnóstico de esquizofrenia, numa Casa de Saúde Mental desde os 16 anos de idade. Perante a constatação de que o participante, apesar do internamento prolongado, estaria compensado, o presente estudo teve como objectivo: verificar a existência de elementos que permitissem confirmar, ou não, o diagnóstico de esquizofrenia, à luz de algumas ideias e conceitos psicanalíticos e; inferir sobre os factores que poderão ter contribuído para o seu adoecer, e internamento prolongado. Utilizou-se a história de vida como instrumento de recolha de dados, construída com base em 16 entrevistas de carácter semi-directivo que, depois de transcritas e organizadas, deram origem a um corpus final, alvo de uma análise de conteúdo. Os resultados indicam que continuam a existir indivíduos a viver em instituições psiquiátricas com um diagnóstico que não corresponde à sua condição. Com base nos resultados, concluimos ser necessário rever, não apenas, as politicas de saúde mental e os modelos utilizados mas, sobretudo, a atitude a adoptar face à doença mental ou a quem, em algum momento da sua vida, adoece psiquicamente.
ABSTRACT: The participant of this investigation it is a men with 74 years old, single, intern in a psychiatric institution, since his 16 years old, with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. In the presence of the fact that the participant, in spite of the long internment, apparently, presented a compensate behavior, the purpose of the study was: to verify the existence of elements that allow us to confirm, or not, the diagnosis of schizophrenia, with the support of some psychoanalytic concepts, and; to infer about the factors that contributed for the participant illness and for the long internment. The history of life was employed as an instrument to gather the information and, constructed with basis on 16 semi-structured interviews that, after being transcribed, gave origin to a final corpus, object of a content analysis. The results suggest the existence, right now, of persons living in psychiatric institutions with a diagnosis not correspondent to their condition. The results allow concluding about the need to re-examine the mental health politics, the used models, and, above all, the attitude toward mental illness or, in view of those who, in some moment of their lives, are in pain.
