ABSTRACT: The importance of Spiritual Well-being has been recognized, provoking increasing interest in the literature (Gouveia, 2011). The Fisher´s model (1999) is one of the most recent and complete models of Spiritual Well-Being. However, there are important questions of validity to be answered (Rowold, 2011). The overall objective of this thesis was the cross-cultural validation of the Spiritual Well-Being instrument, SHALOM. After framing Spiritual Well-Being and justifying its relevance, 3 validations were performed on a total sample of 431 general population adults, in which 263 are Portuguese and 168 are Brazilians. SHALOM was tested along with: EBEP, Item of Happiness in percent of time from Fordyce Emotions Questionnaire, WHOQOL global quality of life item and the global health item of SF Health-36v2. First, a factorial validity of the Portuguese version of SHALOM was analyzed through a CFA that presented a satisfactory adequacy of the factorial structure in the total sample and separately in the Portuguese and Brazilian populations. Second, the convergent/discriminant validity was analyzed with Psychological Well-Being measured with the EBEP and distinguished the instruments. Finally, a concurrent validity analysis of Spiritual Well-Being relative to other well-being indicators, in which spiritual well-being was positively associated with Happiness, Quality of Life, Psychological Well-Being and Health. The relationship between Spiritual Well-Being and Health was moderated by nationality. Comparatively, the results indicate cultural differences in the relevance of the Spiritual Well-Being dimensions between the Portuguese and Brazilian populations. We discuss implications of the findings, the study limitations and future researches are suggested.
