Description
Tese de mestrado. Biologia (Ecologia Marinha).
In the present work conventional tagging and acoustic telemetry were used to monitor the movements of Diplodus sp., within the Marine Protected Area of Pessegueiro Island, Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. During the course of this study, 1224 Diplodus sp. were captured and marked with conventional tags, of which 894 white seabreams (Diplodus sargus Linnaeus, 1758) and 330 two-banded seabreams (Diplodus vulgaris Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817). The recapture rate for these species was 3,47% and 0,61%, respectively. The majority of recaptures occurred during the following marking campaign, with the exception of two individuals that were captured by recreational fisherman, one near Faro, in March 2012, and the other near the study site in July 2013, and 3 specimens captured in the last campaing in October 2013. Concerning the acoustic telemetry, 19 D. sargus were tagged with acoustic transmitters, 18 of which remained within the study area during the entire study period. The study site was divided in 5 areas reflecting the receptors placement and habitat characteristics within the AMP, of which 3 were more frequently used, Exterior zone, Interior Protected zone and Interior Exposed zone. The information concerning the study site use was analyzed taking into account the dial and the tide patterns. Passageways and halts were also identified within the AMP. High site fidelity was confirmed during summer and the different zones reported distinct patterns of use that were related with some of the environmental parameters analysed. The surrounding area of Pessegueiro Island proved to be an important refuge and feeding area for Diplodus sp., which indicates that the protection measures in place, such as interdiction to commercial and recreational fishing, and the proper dimentioning of the MPA in relation to the studied species ecology, are very important in order to achieve a sustainable management for these species in the Southwest Coast of Portugal.
