The presente study is part of a wider investigation, which main purpose is to translate and adapt the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (ERQ-CA) to the Portuguese population, to fill the need for an instrument that evaluates the emotional self-regulation strategies used by the Portuguese children and adolescents. There were also established three specific goals: (1) study the psychometric properties of Psychological Well-Being Scale for Adolescents (EBEPA) and Portuguese version of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (ESV) on Children and adolescents from the Portuguese, African and Roma ethnic groups, and also of the ERQ-CA for the last two; (2) verify in what way do the emotional self-regulation strategies relate to the psychological well-being and life satisfaction on the African and Roma subsamples and (3) investigate the potential differences between the Portuguese, African and Roma subsamples in terms of the use of emotional self-regulation strategies, psychological well-being and life satisfaction. The sample consisted of 816 participants, with ages between 10 and 18 years old, split into three subsamples: Portuguese, African and Roma, with 700, 84 and 32 participants, respectively. The data collection was done by the aplication of three questionaires: ERQ-CA, EBEPA and ESV, aforesaid. The ERQ-CA assumed a different structure on the Portuguese population than the one found on its original version, presenting acceptable psychometric qualities and being promising on the evaluation of the emotional self-regulation strategies used by the Portuguese Children and Adolescents. The psychometric qualities of EBEPA and ESV proved that their use was adequate for all the ethnic groups in study. Significant correlations were found between intra and inter instruments variables, to the African and Roma ethnic groups, most of them corroborating what has been described in previous studies with adult subjects. There were also found significant differences between the Portuguese and Roma ethnic groups in terms of the emotional regulation strategies used. The Roma population proved to resort more frequently to Emotional Suppression strategy. The psychological well-being levels also proved to be different, with the Portuguese having a higher level on this variable than the Roma population. This seems to indicate that the ethnic group influences both the self-regulation strategies used and the well-being level, not proving to have a significant effect on general life satisfacion.
