According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2013), annually the suicide victims are about one million people, with the highest rates in advanced adulthood. Thus there is a need to formulate effective prevention strategies for this population. These strategies include the identification of specific and quantifiable risk factors (Conwell, Duberstein, & Caine, 2002; Conwell & Thompson, 2008), becoming relevant the study of the relationship between these factors and the risk of suicidal ideation in older adults. The primary objective of this study is to explore the association between personality traits and attitudes towards ageing with suicidal ideation, in a sample of elderly adults over 65 years old integrated in the community. The data collection was based on four questionnaires that were answered by the elderly, the Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire – Revised (SBQ-R; Osman, Bagge, Gutierrez, Konick, Kopper & Barrios, 2001; Campos, Rebelo & Abreu, 2011), The Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI; Costa & McCrae 1989, 1992; Lima & Simões, 2000), the Attitudes to Ageing Questionnaire (AAQ-24; Laidlaw, Power, Schmidt & WHOQOL-OLD GROUP, 2007; Silva, Lima & Machado, 2013) and a socio- demographic questionnaire. The sample was divided in two groups, the "Suicidal Ideation" group, made up of 30 individuals and the group "No suicidal ideation", consisting of 90 subjects. The two groups were then compared, and the results that stood out were that suicidal ideation was higher in females than in males. With regard to personality traits, comparing the group, the trait “Conscientiousness” was higher in the group "No suicidal ideation" and the trait "Neuroticism" was most salient in the "Suicidal Ideation" group. The trait "Neuroticism" was higher in women than in men in both study groups. In the group "Suicidal ideation" we found more negative attitudes to ageing than in the group "No suicidal ideation". In the group "Suicidal ideation" we found a strong and negative correlation between the trait "Neuroticism" and the attitude "Psychosocial losses" and "Psychological development". The results were discussed according to the existing literature and the study limitations and future research proposals are presented.
