A obra de Manoel Pimentel Arte de Navegar reflecte vários aspectos da ciência náutica ao tempo que foi publicada. O facto das duas edições, separadas por um lapso de tempo de apenas 13 anos, apresentarem importantes diferenças, torna-a desde logo motivo de análise da evolução da ciência náutica nesse curto espaço de tempo. Enquadrou-se a Arte de Navegar na sua época, considerando a navegação astronómica e os complementos a ela associados (cartográfico, instrumental, etc.), focando a transi ão da prática empírica para a científica e a forma ão da “escola” portuguesa, que subsistiu para além do fim do poder naval português, e o papel desempenhado pelas instituições relacionadas com os cosmógrafos-mores. A importância da Arte de Navegar advém da apresentação abrangente da ciência disponível ao seu tempo, pois não só faz o ponto da situação em que se encontrava na passagem do século XVII para o XVIII, como mostra a evolução operada em treze anos nos procedimentos técnicos. Finaliza-se esta análise inventariando as diferenças nas duas edições e comentando-as à luz da experiencia didáctica do autor e da evolução do conhecimento científico e experimental desenvolvido no período que mediou entre as duas edições. Conclui-se que a obra de Manoel Pimentel é construída sobre o desenvolvimento notável do ambiente cultural e académico em Portugal dos séculos XV a XVII. Este ambiente foi possível como produto do investimento feito na investigação e ensino da ciência e arte náuticas pelas determinações Reais que produziram a Aula da Esfera e as particularidades curriculares do ensino no Colégio de Santo. Antão, instituições onde se observa o intercambio académico com o mundo conhecido que claramente se demonstra pela análise da Arte de Navegar. Abstract: The work of Manoel Pimentel Arte de Navegar reflects several aspects of the nautical sciences at the time of its publication. Those two editions, separated by just thirteen years, present significant differences, which suggest the interest of the works for the analysis of the evolution of the nautical sciences over that short period of time. The historical framework for the Arte de Navegar was considered, namely the astronomical navigation and the associated tools (charts, instruments, etc.), focusing on the transition from an empirical towards a scientific practice and the formation of the Portuguese “school”, which subsisted past the end of the Portuguese naval power; and furthermore, the role played by the institutions related to the role of „cosmógrafomor‟. The importance of Arte de Navegar arises from its comprehensive presentation of the science available at the time, as it not merely states the „state of the art‟ of navigation on the transition from the XVII to the XVIII Century, as it also reveals the evolution operated over those thirteen years on the technical procedures employed. The analysis finalises with the inventory of the differences between the two editions, commented with due regard to the pedagogic experience of the author and to the evolution of empirical and scientific knowledge developed over the time period between the editions. To conclude, Manoel Pimentel‟s work is built upon the notable development of the cultural and academic environment in Portugal over the XV to the XVII Centuries. This environment was made possible as a product of the investment made in the research and teaching of nautical science and art through the Royal charters instituting the Aula da Esfera and the curricular particularities of the teaching at the “Santo Antão College”, institutions where we can observe the academic interchange with the known world, which is clearly documented in the analysis of the Arte de Navegar.
