Description
Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyse the importance and the meaning of classical influences in the work of the Portuguese writer Miguel Torga, focussing on twelve selected poems from his Diary (Diário). The findings from this research reveal how the chosen corpus when presented to young Advanced Level students may hold the key to the discovery of the Greek and Latin myths, hence an open gateway into classical culture and consequently into the understanding of the western cultural matrix. Thus, after detailed consideration of Torga‟s work and his perspective on mythology, the twelve poems are analysed, exploring the various strands of meaning crossing them. Finally, following a brief survey concerning Torga‟s place in the National Curricula, the dissertation reflects on how important it is for young people to read this great master of Portuguese Literature, not only due to his intrinsic value, but also by virtue of the enriching cultural experience his works may afford them, taking into account as well the significant role played by the school and by the teachers in the process
