Este projecto propõe uma tradução de quatro contos de Malcolm Lowry: «China», «June the 30th, 1934», «Under the Volcano» e «Strange Comfort Afforded by the Profession». Da reflexão deste trabalho ressaltam dois aspectos centrais: por um lado, a articulação com questões tradicionalmente abordadas pela teoria da tradução; por outro, um enquadramento dos contos no contexto da obra do autor. Num primeiro momento, entendendo a natureza fundamentalmente empírica como o factor realmente relevante da tradução, procura pensar a tradição teórica a partir de noções como a traduzibilidade de princípio, o papel do tradutor e a dialéctica da fidelidade/traição. Num segundo momento, analisa os aspectos centrais da obra de Malcolm Lowry, tendo em atenção o modo de criação: se os textos iniciais parecem confluir para aquilo que virá a ser o seu grande romance, Under the Volcano, os textos posteriores denotam uma tendência quase anuladora da expressão anterior. A ideia fulcral subjacente à obra de Malcolm Lowry é a noção do ciclo, culminando no projecto de The Voyage That Never Ends, cuja ambição seria a articulação de um conjunto de obras interligadas. Os contos traduzidos datam de períodos distintos da vida do autor, sendo, por isso mesmo, reveladores, na sua relação entre si, das evoluções desse ciclo. Por fim, apresenta as traduções em formato comentado, dando conta de algumas instâncias emergentes do processo de tradução
Abstract: This project proposes a translation of four short stories of Malcolm Lowry: “China”, “June the 30th, 1934”, “Under the Volcano” and “Strange Comfort Afforded by the Profession”. Further study of these works raises two key aspects: on one hand, its connection with issues traditionally addressed by the theory of translation; on the other, a framework of the short stories within the scope of the author's work. Firstly, assuming the fundamentally empirical nature of translation as the actual relevant factor, it explores the theoretical tradition from the viewpoint of notions as the principle of translatability, the translator’s role and the fidelity/betrayal conflict. Secondly, it examines the core aspects of Malcolm Lowry’s work, considering the form of creation: if the early texts seem to converge into what will become his great novel, Under the Volcano, the later ones reveal an almost nullifying tendency regarding his previous expression. The central idea underlying Malcolm Lowry’s work is the notion of cycle, culminating in the draft of The Voyage That Never Ends, whose ambition was to articulate a set of interrelated works. The translated short stories date from different periods of the author’s life, revealing therefore, in their relationship with each other, different phases of that cycle. Finally, translations are presented in a reviewed layout, giving an account of some instances arising from the translation process.
