The work described below titled ‘Application of a Spectral Characterization Method to the REDEXT Deep Sea Buoy Network’ is presented as the thesis of the Master on Geophysical Sciences of the University of Lisbon. The work was carried out at the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of Cantabria (I.H.Cantabria) which is part of the Civil Engineering School of the University of Cantabria, Spain. A method was designed to classify the different sea-states with the following coefficients: significant wave height, significant wave period, kurtosis coefficient of the wave spectrum and the power of the cosine function of the directional spreading function. The method designed used theoretical models of the energy wave spectrum and the directional spreading function to classify the different sea states registered by the deep sea water buoys REDEXT.

O trabalho descrito abaixo intitulado ‘Application of a Spectral Characterization Method to the REDEXT Deep Sea Buoy Network’ e apresentado como tese do Mestrado em Ciencias Geofisicas da Universidade de Lisboa. O trabalho foi realizado no Instituto de Hidraulica Ambiental de Cantabria (I.H.Cantabria), que faz parte da Escola de Engenharia Civil da Universidade de Cantabria, Espanha. Um metodo foi desarrolhado para classificar os diferentes estados de mar utilizando os seguintes parametros: altura de onda significativa, periodo significativo, o parametro da curtose e a potencia da funcao coseno da funcao de dispersao direccional. O metodo utilizaba modelos teoricos do espectro de energia das ondas e da dispersao direccional para classificar os diferentes estados de mar registados pela rede de boias REDEXT.
