Este trabalho propõe uma reflexão sobre o papel da língua e da literatura na construção discursiva das identidades nacionais a partir do estudo de caso da Eslovênia. Com esse objetivo, é analisado um texto da autoria de Mitja Čander e Aleš Šteger, que serve de introdução ao livro Angels Beneath the Surface: a Selection of Contemporary Slovene Fiction, editado por Tom Priestly. Trata-se de uma antologia de contos eslovenos, publicada em inglês, em 2008, que reúne textos escritos entre 1990 e 2005. O ponto de partida consiste numa breve discussão a respeito das novas perspectivas adotadas pelas atuais teorias sobre os nacionalismos, especialmente a partir do final da segunda metade do século XX. Adota-se a perspectiva da construção discursiva das identidades, entre elas, a identidade nacional. A opção metodológica incide sobre as possibilidades e ferramentas oferecidas pela análise do discurso, especialmente pela Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional. O discurso identitário esloveno, que se depreende da análise do texto, caracateriza-se por uma forte associação entre a criação e preservação de uma identidade nacional e a afirmação e valorização da língua e da literatura eslovenas. Exemplo disso é a exaltação da figura do poeta romântico France Prešeren (1800-1849), apontado como um dos grandes artífices da língua e defensor da ideia nacional. O Dia da Cultura, também chamado de Dia de Prešeren, é considerado feriado nacional e comemorado no aniversário da morte do poeta, no dia 8 de fevereiro. O recurso à língua comum como elemento fundante de uma pretensa identidade nacional não é novo, nem exclusivo da Eslovênia. Ainda assim, ele assume novos significados em face do cenário atual, em que a conquista de visibilidade internacional e a efetiva integração da Eslovênia na União Européia ganham prioridade na agenda do país.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an analysis about the role of language and literature in the discoursive construction of national identities based on Slovenia’s study case. To reach this target, we analyse a text signed by Mitja Čander and Aleš Šteger introducing the book intitled Angels Beneath the Surface: a Selection of Contemporary Slovene Fiction, edited by Tom Priestly. It’s a collection of Slovene short prose, published in English, in 2008, gathering texts written between 1990 and 2005. We start with a brief discussion about the new perspectives presented by the nowadays theories about nationalisms, especially those arisen in the second half of the 20th century. Then we clarify our affiliation to the discoursive constructions of identities perspective – among them, the national ones – and adopt the discoursive analisys as the theory and methodology of this study, especially the Systemic Functional Linguistics. Based on the analysis of the text, Slovene indentity discourse is marked by a strong association between national identity creation and preservation and the affirmation and evaluation of language and literature. One example of that is the exaltation of France Prešeren (1800-1849), the romantic poet considered the inventor of the national language and a great defender or the national idea. Culture’s Day, also named Prešeren’s Day, is considered a national Holliday and is cellebrated in the poet’s death anniversary. The appeal to language as a founding element of an intended national identity is not new or exclusive of Slovenia. Still, it gets new meanings face the actual scenario where the needs of international visibility and efective integration in European Union seem to be a demand for Slovenia.
