A biblioteca é virtual, é digital. A biblioteca é o mundo!
Abstract: Information and communication technologies gave rise to a change in accessing and offering information as well as in the way the library responds to information requests and needs from their public. Nowadays the library does not have any physical or time limits. It has finally and permanently left the physical space and has settled in cyberspace. The library is virtual, it is digital. The library is the world! In this perspective, the library has a website, its online catalogue, it subscribes scientific products and contents online, databases … As the collections are digital, the services are also changing and heading towards this reality. As the collections can be accessed at any time from any place, the services can also be offered on this basis: any time, any place. This project aims at analysing the potentialities of a Service of Digital Reference, how the EU Parliamentary Libraries respond to their users’ information requests, and proposing to the Library of the Assembly of the Republic (Portuguese Parliament) the implementation of a service of digital reference which answers the information requests in real time and both enhances the reference process and improves the quality of the services offered to internal users.
