A literatura infanto-juvenil foi, desde tempos antigos considerada um género menor, já que o seu receptor – a criança – nem sempre teve as considerações merecidas. Com o evoluir dos tempos e da sociedade, esta situação mostra-se em constante mutação, havendo cada vez mais e melhor literatura para crianças e jovens. A primeira forma de literatura infanto-juvenil foi a literatura tradicional de expressão oral e, ainda hoje, consegue provar o seu carácter de universalidade, envolvendo as crianças de várias gerações e de vários tempos nos seus contos. Fá-las imaginar, sonhar, viver, pelas palavras que a compõem. Que a literatura infanto-juvenil e tradicional desenvolve a criança a vários níveis está já provado por diversos estudiosos desta problemática em que nos baseamos. Mas o que é deveras importante mostrar é que os contos tradicionais não deverão ser esquecidos. É função dos Educadores/Professores levá-los para a sala de aula e explorá-los adequadamente, pois o seu cariz educativo fará crescer os alunos. A literatura tradicional representa o pensamento colectivo de um povo que se revê nos contos, transmitindo-os de geração em geração, fazendo deles pertença do património cultural desse povo. A mulher encarada sob o ponto de vista social, é também tratada nos contos, que a retratam de forma mais ou menos verdadeira. Estes mostram, em parte, a função que ela desempenha na época em que estes contos tradicionais são recolhidos e na actualidade.

The literature for children and youth was, since the ancient times considered a minor style of writing, given that his receiver – the children – hadn’t always the deserved considerations. Among the evolution of the times and society, this situation is in constant change, existing more and better literature for children and young people. The first from of literature for children and youth was the traditional literature of oral expression and, even today, it can prove his universal character, envolving children of different generations and different times in its tales. Makes them imagine, dream and live through the written words. It is proved by several diligent of this problematic in witch we are based that the literature for children and youth and develops the children in different levels. But what is really important to show is that the traditional tales musn’t be forgotten. It is the function of Educators/Teachers to take them to the classroom and explore them properly, given that its educative visage will make the student grow up. The traditional literature represents the collective thought of a people that review himself in this tales, handing down of generation in generation, making the tales a cultural patrimony of that people. In a social point of view, the women is also regarded in that tales, which regard her in a more or less true way. This tales show, in part, the role that the women played by the era of the traditional tales and plays in the present time.
