Description
An important phenomenon in spoken European Portuguese system of forms of address is the decreasing of second person plural pronoun vós replaced by an increasing use of vocês, mainly in subject function. In this paper, we analyse the variable use of vós and vocês in subject and object function. The sample of analysis is composed by sociolinguistic interviews, collected in Braga, stratified according to gender, age and level of schooling. Our analysis attests that vós, overt or null, became rare in region. Furthermore, the occurrence of the null pronoun is motivated by linguistic and social factors, being more frequent with irregular verbs, and in the speech of older speakers with low degree of formal schooling.
