Description
O período compreendido entre 1950 e 1973 caracterizou-se por um
elevado crescimento económico nacional, a chamada época de ouro da
economia portuguesa. Foram vários os factores que contribuíram para
este crescimento, nomeadamente a abertura da economia ao exterior (a
adesão à EFTA, a participação no FMI e no Banco Mundial, bem como a
adesão ao GATT), a emigração, o ensino, o progresso tecnológico, a
melhoria das infra-estruturas de comunicação, a forte mudança na
distribuição da população por sectores de actividade e localização
geográfica. No seguimento da abertura do país ao estrangeiro o Turismo
começou a surgir como um sector relevante para o crescimento
económico, empregando abundante mão-de-obra, gerando grande volume
de divisas e contribuindo significativamente para o PIB. O Turismo foi
reconhecido como sector estratégico do desenvolvimento económico,
sendo incluído no Plano Intercalar de Fomento. O Banco de Portugal e o
INE começaram a publicar estatísticas a ele referentes. A análise dos
dados disponíveis do Turismo neste período, permite concluir que este foi
um factor de integração europeia, aliado a outros factores importantes,
como foram a emigração, o investimento estrangeiro e o comércio externo. The period between 1950 and 1973 was characterized by high rates of
economic growth, the so-called golden age of the Portuguese economy.
Several factors contributed to this growth, namely the opening of the
economy (membership of EFTA, participation in the IMF and the World
Bank, as well as adhesion to the GATT), emigration, education,
technological progress, improvement of communication infrastructures, the
strong change in the distribution of the population by sectors of activity and
geographic location. Pursuing the opening of the country to the outside
world, Tourism starts to appear as relevant sector for economic growth,
using abundant man power, generating a great volume of foreign currency
and contributing significantly to GDP. Tourism is recognized as a strategical
sector of economic development, being included in the Intermediate
Development Plan. The Bank of Portugal and the National Statistical
Institute start to publish sectoral statistics. The analysis of available data on
tourism in this period leads to the conclusion that this was a factor of
European integration, together with other important factors, such as
