Description

Remote sensing practicals, [e-book]. NOVA Information Management School, Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

The main purpose of this book is to prepare the student to carry out practical projects to extract information from satellite images for land cover monitoring. This book guides the student to the acquisition of concepts of digital processing of satellite images through practical exercises. Various stages of a remote sensing project are covered, ranging the downloading of satellite images, extraction of information with automatic classifiers, and the evaluation of the accuracy of the products obtained. The data provided here have been prepared so that the student can follow this book autonomously. This book consists of three parts: (1) tutorial for obtaining satellite images on the Internet, (2) satellite image processing tutorial in ArcGIS Pro, and (3) digital satellite image processing exercises. In the first part the student learns how to obtain satellite images for a certain area. Second, the student learns how to execute in a specific software the most common procedures of digital image processing, such as creation of coloured composites, vegetation indices, supervised and unsupervised image classification, change detection, and thematic accuracy assessment. Finally, the third part includes practical exercises designed for the student to apply the procedures previously learned. Sentinel-2 and Landsat satellite images are used, which allows the student to gain sensitivity to the specificities of two of the most used satellite missions. The exercises are accompanied by a set of questions that point the student to important aspects of the interpretation of the results obtained. It is proposed the student to use the subset of Sentinel-2 data made available by the professor to perform the tasks of the first and second parts of this book. This procedure enables the student to get prepared for the exercises of the third and last part, for which data are also provided through the link provided above. In choosing the software for the second and third parts of the book, ArcGIS Pro is preferred because is used in other curricular units. Thus, the student will not take much time in learning new software, thereby focusing mostly in learning remote sensing, putting theoretical concepts into practice and developing generic and transferable skills on digital image processing. Thus, advanced tools available in ArcGIS Pro are not explored in this book, but students are free to explore in more depth the potential offered by the software. This tutorial was written for ArcGIS Pro 3.1.0.
