Temo-nos deparado com o envelhecimento da população de sujeitos portadores de Deficiência Mental, acima de tudo devido à melhoria nos sistemas de saúde. Falar em envelhecimento nesta população específica, parece ser ainda um tabu na nossa sociedade, contudo é um tema que precisa de relevância. Neste sentido, este estudo tem como objectivo conhecer as representações e imagens que a população tem acerca do envelhecimento em sujeitos portadores de Deficiência Mental. Para tal, foi construído um questionário que pretende caracterizar a opinião de 120 sujeitos da população geral. Os resultados obtidos no presente estudo, remetem para uma falta de reflexão acerca do tema em questão, assim como a presença de estereótipos associados a esta população específica. As ocorrências mais frequentemente observadas remetem para uma exclusão do sujeito com Deficiência Mental em processo de envelhecimento, associado a altos níveis de dependência e limitações que actualmente não se verificam. Discutiremos os dados apontando algumas direcções para a inclusão destes sujeitos tendo em vista a promoção da qualidade de vida e uma vivência saudável do processo de envelhecimento.

We have been faced with an aging population of subjects with mental retardation, above all due to improvements in health systems. Speaking in the aging of this specific population, still seems to be a taboo in our society, yet it is an issue that needs relevance. So, this study aims to understand the ideas and images that people have about aging in individuals with mental retardation. To this end, a questionnaire was constructed to characterize the views of 120 subjects from the general population. The results obtained in this study refer to a lack of reflection on the topic, as well as the presence of stereotypes associated with this specific population. The events most frequently observed refer to an exclusion of subjects with mental retardation in the process of aging, associated with high levels of dependency and limitations that are not currently existent. We will discuss the data pointing out some directions to the inclusion of these subjects with a view to promoting quality of life and living a healthy aging process.
