Description
Being emotions a crucial element for the communication between living beings and also to comprehend the actions of the same, both daily (Arangüena, 2001), and in psychopathology (Correia, 2014), with the following research we intend to develop a system of video-stimuli ecologically validated for the ten emotions of Izard. The investigation problem raises the following objective questions: 1- Given that in a video will be triggered various emotional reactions, will there be inter-subjective agreement relatively to the salient emotion in each dynamic configuration of stimuli? 2- The answer to this question will create a "battery" that can be used in research and practice with the ten emotions of Izard? 3- If we find a video for each of the emotions studied (with high salience), will there be inter-subjective agreement for the dimensions "arousal" and for the "valence"? To answer these questions and test the associated hypothesis, we selected extracts of daily life videos, as samples of dynamic settings of stimuli, for which have been evaluated, for each configuration (salience, intensity and valence) in order to create a stimuli-video battery who’s ecologically valid, with potential for use in research and professional practice, using a sample of the Portuguese population. There’s been tested four hypothesis based on the independent variable "genders": 1- In each “gender”, there will be found stimulus-videos with an intersubjective agreement, at or above than 60%, in identifying the most salient emotion – “effective-video stimuli”, using TDES; 2- The “effective-video stimuli” for each emotion will be different between participants of different gender; 3- In each gender, the valence of video-stimuli, found for the emotions, is evaluated in the same way by the DES and the SAM; 4- In each gender, the perceived arousal of the vídeo-stimuli found for the emotions, will be evaluated equally by DES and the SAM. Two studies were conducted with 19 (Study I) and 175 individuals (Study II), respectively, where there were found videos for emotions such as Surprise Positive, surprise Negative, Joy, Interest, Sadness, Disgust and Fear, in both genders. In female participants, the emotions associated with the videos have all the same arousal and in the 'positive valence ® negative valence' way, they are positioned as follows: joy, interest and positive surprise, fear, disgust, sadness and negative surprise (valences ranged from 2 to 7 in joy in the last three ex aequo). In male participants, emotions associated with the videos have arousal values between 3 (sadness) and 9 (joy) and in the 'positive valence ® negative valence' way, they are positioned as follows: positive surprise, joy, fear, surprise negative and interest, disgust and sadness (valences ranged from 3 to 8 in joy in the past two ex aequo). In short, in both genders the distribution of videos in a Cartesian reference with intensity and valence does not approach the circumplex model as we hoped. The study has limitations and it is necessary to expand the study to find more video-stimuli and validate them also with psychophysiological variables.
