The present article seeks to discuss the representation of the feminine in Rome in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. For this, it was necessary a brief approach on the mechanisms of male domina tion discussed by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, as well as some concepts developed by the philosopher Michel Foucault both essential for this study. We also propose in the light The Merchant of Plautus anddemonstrate the intentionalities present in the aforementioned comedy.
O presente artigo busca discutir a representação do feminino em Roma nos sécs. III e II a.C. Para tal, fez-se necessário uma breve abordagem acerca dos mecanismos de dominação masculina discutidos pelo sociólogo Pierre Bourdieu, bem como de alguns conceitos desenvolvidos pelo filósofo Michel Foucault – ambos imprescindíveis para este estudo. Propomo-nos também à luz da Teoria da Representação analisar a comédia latina O Mercador, de Plauto, e demonstrar as intencionalidades presentes na aludida comédia.
