This study analyses the influence of contextual factors such as the strategic priorities and the external environment, and specific factors such as the decline phase of the organizational life cycle and the position of managers with respect to the use of non-financial metrics in the calculation of the variable remuneration of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) managers. Data was collected through a questionnaire, and the final sample consists of 1 435 responses. The data collected revealed that the use (40%) and the weight given to non-financial metrics (average 7%) in Portuguese companies is still lower than the financial metrics, regarding the variable remuneration tied to performance. The main conclusion is that financial functions have the tendency to give less weight to non-financial metrics. On the other hand, evidence could not be found regarding the influence of factors such as strategic priorities, external environment and the company's decline phase. Analysis by type of non-financial metrics used in the study showed that greater weight is assigned to the metrics of customers in the presence of increased hostility while operating metrics receive greater weight when the environment is dynamic.
