Thirty-six piglets of 21 days of age were used to test the effect of two sources of sodium butyrate on digestibility, development of the digestive tract, intestinal fermentation and morphology of the intestinal mucosa. The piglets were divided by 3 diets: RB (control), A - RB + butyrate 0.5% A, B - RB + 0.25% butyrate B. The two forms of butyrate A and B dosing 54% and 98% of butyric acid, respectively. There was a tendency for reduction of faecal consistency with butyrate B. TTAD Crude Protein was 0.772, 0.790 and 0.838 for diets RB, A and B, respectively (P <0.05). The weight of the spleen and empty small and large intestine was reduced with butyrate in particular butyrate B. The content of DM (%) of the ileal content was 6.67, 5.33 and 5.10 for diets RB, A and B, respectively (P <0.05). In caecum the activity of xylanase and pectinase was reduced with sodium butyrate. The height of ileal villi (μm) was 295, 312 and 280 for diets RB, A and B, respectively (P <0.10).
