Description
ABSTRACT - The main goal of the present dissertation is the treatment of the public spaces, considering the evolving context of the metropolis of Tokyo, in order to create a place of permanence and dynamic social gatherings, which go against its lack in central Tokyo and promote social cohesion. Currently, the public spaces in the centre of Tokyo consist of large green parks, which have a considerable flow of people. The University Campus and izakayas (bar/restaurant) are also frequented as places for social interaction. Some existing open spaces are not able to attract the population because they are impersonal and uncharacterized, taking into consideration that the japanese culture appreciate contained spaces. The alleys and streets closed to traffic are still very sought and appealing. The existance of scarce interstitial spaces due the a very dense construction mass in the central Tokyo is caused by economical interests and the lack of an urban planning that aims the quality of life ot he population, particularly in the promotion of public spaces. The realization of this dissertation was based on a bibliographic research and theoretical reflection, direct contact with the context, diverse collection of information and development of a project work, where special focus was given to the design of the colective spaces. As the main conclusions, it is noteworthy that the public spaces in Tokyo had great expression in the past but this gradually decreased over the years, in favor of the economic development. Nowadays, they are still not a priority in the urban planning, which brings relevance to these topic in a moment when one beggins to sense a change in attitude of the population, with regard to the claim of their right to the public space.
