This paper aims to characterize the state of art of solid waste management in Assomada city, identifying the main difficulties associated to the management of municipal solid waste (MSU) and making suggestions for improving MSW management strategy in the municipality. The assessment of the production of waste, characterizing and quantifying the waste generated from the source of production to the final destination. We evaluated the satisfaction of the population in relation to the management of MSW and availability for future collaboration on improving that, and the satisfaction of the population of Ribeira da Barca for the location of municipal waste. The work was developed based on information provided by municipal bodies, the Director of Municipal and Environmental Sanitation in literature searches, surveys accomplishments will affect population and experimental work (quantification and characterization of waste and laboratory tests). To have a better waste management is necessary to know what has been produced. The research undertaken demonstrates that the city faces serious problems of MSW management. An important conclusion of this work is the lack of environmental education programs that allows the improvement of public policies on waste management with greater integration among the various sectors of civil society, so that more effective strategies are developed
