Description
ABSTRACT: Lisbon’s territory at large manifests a collection of diversified urban morphologies and fabrics which, in their genesis, evolution and today’s condition, credit the aforementioned territory as a metropolitan reality. In this formative and transformation process the mobility, communications and public utility infrastructures play a preponderant role, establishing a dynamic and diversified relationship with the metropolitan fabrics. The insertion of these infrastructures in the rich physiographic and hydrographic regional matrices produces extremely interesting combinations from the viewpoint of landscape and its continuities with urban settlements. The dissertation is structured around the conceptualization of infrastructural mediation, exploring it as an interpretative and design instrument for the metropolitan condition, as well as a morphogenetic mechanism. Given the importance of this conceptualization a systematization of its morphological mechanisms is developed and here presented. We refer to these mechanisms as reticulation, fabric weaving and interfacing. A periodization is adopted from 1856 to 2007, divided into five moments representative of the infrastructural development of the Lisbon’s metropolitan territory. The organization of a cartographic base and the development of interpretative drawings are instruments which combine fruitfully with the conceptual dimension in whole process. The research occurred in a moment when significant interventions, namely important infrastructural public works in Lisbon metropolis, are being scrutinized. In this respect, the research also constitutes an opportunity to deepen a trans-scalar and multi infrastructural approach supported by a propositive spatial dimension.
