The existence of large public parks in cities has always been a fact that followed the history of the growth of various cities. Their social, cultural, ecological and economic benefits have been recognized for many centuries and over time took different forms of organization and expression within the city. The abandonment of certain sites and their condition as new open spaces in the city emerges as an opportunity to convert a space with a specific function, in a green public park that serves its surrounding population and supports the expression of urban ecological structure. The opportunity to take an area without expression and to supply it with essential tools that arises as a site for urban regeneration is a very attractive and challenging project. In the context of reusing new open spaces of large scale in the city, the possibility of the relocation of Portela’s Airport was analyzed in this paper in order to create a proposal for a green urban park. This proposal must be able to articulate the historical, cultural and social elements of the place, with the elements of the Urban Ecological Structure for the Airport’s City Park to be successfully incorporated into the dynamics of a changing city. The reality of urban growth may have stalled, but structures like airports that should be removed from the urban environment, were agglutinated by its expansion. Because of these occurrences, the conversion of airports into a green park was put into practice in several countries, with citizens and green structure benefiting from this change. The Tempelhof Freiheit Park was one of the latest examples of reappropriation of an airport in Berlin, this being the case study availed to establish points of similarity with the proposal of this work.
