Description
The growing usage of mobile devices across the world came to change the way communications are established and information is accessed. This can also be seen in any type of business, which may become more productive, improving their efficiency and effectiveness with resort to these kinds of technologies. This research attempts to answer the following research questions: “How to transform an organization into a mobile organization?” and “How does an organization expect to benefit through its transformation to a mobile organization?”, focusing on an organization that acts on the utility sector, and is currently developing an innovating mobility project for its mobile work force. In this study a qualitative case study methodology was applied, where seven of the organization’s members were interviewed. Results show that there must be considerations on three levels: for transformations in people, such as the satisfaction of requirements of the end users, the existence of know-how and internal technical capacity and the training and monitoring of users; for transformations in processes, such as the redesign and optimization of existing processes and the creation of new ones; and for transformations in technology, such as the purchase of new devices and the integration of these with back office systems. With respect to the benefits, twenty were identified. Those to highlight are a better customer service, the increase in competitive advantage, and obtaining more information with a better quality and reduced errors.
