This study analyses the relationship between the diversity and size of the Board of Directors and the use of incentive systems in Portuguese firms. The sample consists of 1117 Portuguese public limited liability companies, for which we collected information from Informa D & B database and a questionnaire, whose universe was composed of 63% of male managers and the remaining 37% of the female gender. Within this study, we estimated logit models and tobit to test whether the composition and size of the board are associated with the use of incentive systems by firms and the variable compensation tied to the performance of the questionnaire participants. The results show that the size of the board is positively associated with the use of incentive systems, and the variable pay of participants. Relatively to the presence and proportion of women on the board of directors, I find a negatively association with the use of incentive systems by firms. Additionally, I find no evidence of a relationship between gender diversity and the percentage of variable pay received by participants.
