O estudo é apresentado em três capítulos e dispõe de um glossário com o qual se precisam alguns dos termos e conceitos utilizados. No capítulo 1 faz-se a apreciação da evolução das coberturas de grande vão, desde o século XIX até aos nossos dias. Nesta análise as diferentes soluções são agregadas tanto quanto possível em tipos estruturais sendo cada um deles associado ao período histórico no qual se registaram as contribuições tecnológicas mais significativas, por forma a melhor perspectivar as condições que determinarama sua evolução. Finaliza-se esta análise identificando as tendências evolutivas da concepção arquitectónica das coberturas de grande vão. No capítulo 2 apresenta-se uma sistematização das coberturas traccionadas actualmente disponíveis, por se considerar que o futuro de grandes vãos está indiscutivelmente associado a este tipo estrutural. Neste estudo analisam-se as soluções em cabos, redes e membranas traccionadas: caracterizando-as, estabelecendo qualitativamente a sua eficácia e limitações e dando particular atenção aos aspectos da sua concepção arquitectónica. No capítulo 3 examinam-se metodologias projectuais que permitem de um modo expedito e sem grandes exigências de cálculo, orientar a fase inicial da concepção arquitectónica das coberturas traccionadas, assegurando o controlo e a optimização da forma e sensibilizando o projectista para o comportamento físico dos sistemas.

The paper is presented in three chapters and has a glossary by which some of the employed terms and conceptions are specified. Chapter 1 estimates the evolution of the large roofs, from the XIXth century on up to our days. In this analysis the different solutions are grouped together as much as possible in structural types, each one of them associated with the historical period in which were registered the most significant technological contributions, in order to bring better into perspective the conditions which determined their evolution. This analysis closes identifying the evolutionary tendencies of the architectonic conception of the large span roofs. Chapter 2 presents a systematization of the tractioned coverings actually at disposal, on the consideration that the future of the large spans lenghts is indisputably associated with this structural type. In this paper the solutions have been analyzed on cables, nets and membranes; they were characterized establishing their efficiency and limitations as regards quality and paying special attention to the aspects of their architectonic conception. Chapter 3 examines the projective methodologies which allow in an expedite way and without great demands of calculation the orientation of the initial phase of the architectonic form finding of the tensile roofs, assuring the control and the optimization of the form and making the designer aware of the physical behaviour of the systems.
