Com este trabalho pretendemos recolher e analisar as representações dos formandos da escola de formação de professores, Instituto Pedagógico (IP) sobre o ensino da Língua Portuguesa (LP) em Cabo Verde, assim sendo, contribuir para uma melhoria significativa do ensino/aprendizagem da LP no contexto escolar. Pareceu-nos pertinente colher informações para determinadas questões de investigação: 1. Que representações têm os futuros professores/ estudantes das disciplinas Aprendizagem de Língua Portuguesa I e II sobre a concepção de língua e o seu ensino? 2. Que papel desempenha o crioulo, Língua Materna (LM) no ensino do Português língua segunda (L2)? Tomamos como público – alvo os alunos do 1º e 2º anos das disciplinas Aprendizagem de Língua Portuguesa I e II do IP. A fim de obtermos dados relativos aos aspectos acima apontados, utilizámos uma investigação de natureza etnográfica, um inquérito por questionário, num estudo qualitativo conjugado com o quantitativo, com duas entrevistas exploratórias, feitas a alunos do 2º ano. Ainda testámos o questionário através de um pré teste, que foi aplicado a dois alunos do 1º ano, com o objectivo de afinarmos os nossos instrumentos de recolha de dados. Com base nos resultados das entrevistas elaborámos um questionário que foi aplicado em duas turmas, uma do 1º ano do curso Formação Inicial (FI) com vinte e oito alunos e outra do 2º ano do curso Formação em Exercício (FE) a vinte e oito formandos. Desta forma escolheu-se o programa SPSS para o tratamento dos dados com recurso à analise de conteúdo nomeadamente questões abertas Este estudo deu respostas às questões de investigação que definimos anteriormente. Permitiu-nos avaliar algumas fragilidades existentes no processo de ensino-aprendizagem da LP em Cabo Verde. Sendo os formandos do curso FE; professores em exercício, estes têm consciência do funcionamento da LP da competência linguística, sociolinguística e pragmática-discursiva dos alunos do Ensino Básico Integrado (EBI), mas notamos insuficiências dos formandos no tocante a algumas estruturas da LP que são semelhantes às da Língua Cabo-verdiana (LCV) e essas eventuais semelhanças induzem ao erro. Notámos também que um estudo da LCV como disciplina podia ajudar os professores a terem uma consciência metalinguística e assim teriam um conhecimento explícito da estrutura das duas línguas. Tendo este estudo sido feito na base da comparação dos resultados dos dois curso, constatámos que os do curso FI sendo inexperientes, precisariam também de um estudo da LCV, a fim de distinguirem as diferenças e semelhanças entre as estruturas das duas línguas a assim promover a construção do bilinguismo. Nesse âmbito, consideramos pertinente apresentar algumas sugestões pedagógicodidácticas, no sentido de se melhorar o ensino da LP no IP e consequentemente no EBI. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to gather and analyze the performance data on the graduates from the Teacher Training College,” Instituto Pedagógico” (IP), in relation to their teaching of the Portuguese Language in Cape Verde, and thus contribute to the improvement of the teaching and learning of in the school context. It seemed relevant to us to collect data for the following areas of research: 1-How will future teachers and students in the discipline of Portuguese Language Instruction, Courses I & 2 perform in relation to the concept of language, and its teaching? 2- What is the role of Creole, the Mother Tongue (LM), Cape Verde Creole (CC), in the teaching of the Second Language (L2) Portuguese? Our target group was the first and the second year students in the Portuguese Language Instruction Courses 1& 2, at the Teacher Training College, “Instituto Pedagógico” in Praia. To gather data for the research questions above, we used ethnographies and questionnaires, examined for qualitative and quantitative correlations in two interviews with the second year students. We also pre-tested the questionnaires with the first year students to sharpen our data gathering instruments. Based on the results from the interviews, we developed a questionnaire that was implemented in two groups: one group of twenty eight students in the first year Initial Training Course. We used the PSS software as a resource to process the data and analyze the content and the open questions. This study provided answers to the research questions defined above. It allowed us to evaluate some existing weakness in the process of teaching and learning Portuguese in Cape Verde. The teachers currently practicing are fully conscious of their Integrated Basic Education students’ competences in the areas of linguistics, sociolinguistics and pragmatic discourse. However, we noted some weaknesses related to understanding the structural similarities between the Portuguese Language and the Cape Verde Creole, which could eventually introduce to errors. We also noted that the study of Cape Verde Creole as a discipline could help these teacher acquire a metalinguistic understanding, and thus they would have an explicit knowledge of the structure of the two languages (both the Mather language and the L2).Since this is a comparative study of the outcomes from the two courses, we found that the inexperienced first year students in the Initial training course also need to study Cape Verde Creole to help them distinguish the differences and the similarities in the structures of the two languages, and thus promote the development of functional bilingualism. As a result of these findings, we felt it would be appropriate to present some pedagogical and didactic suggestions, with a view to improving the teaching of Portuguese in Instituto Pedagógico and consequently in Basic Education in Cape Verde.
