Insights on the experimental dynamic behaviour and energy losses of rocking blocks under free vibration

The campaign includes 120 tests, varying the block’s height-to-width ratio and considering multiple specimens to account for the aleatoric variability of the phenomenon. The study offers full reconstruction of the three-dimensional free-rocking motion, giving insights into the influence of unintended geometrical asymmetries, as well as material and interface irregularities on the response. The paper revisits the experimental estimation of the angular Coefficient of Restitution (CoR) through different methodologies based on the angular velocities, potential energy, and potential and frictional energies. The results are compared with Housner’s theoretical model. Due to the sensitive nature of rocking motion, a statistical approach is employed. The findings indicate that Housner’s model provides statistically accurate predictions of energy losses for blocks of medium-to-high slenderness (i.e. with aspect ratio while it becomes statistically inaccurate for very slender and very stocky blocks. Importantly, the study demonstrates that all three experimentally estimated CoRs statistically depend on the aspect ratio. Finally, the CoRs extracted from the potential energy and potential and frictional energies are found statistically dependent on the rocking amplitude, while the CoR extracted from the angular velocities show statistical independence. Overall, this study offers a pathway for more systematic analyses and improved predictions of energy losses during impacts. -

Media visuality and racialisation: Who is in the spotlight?

Released or inspired by the United States of America and the United Kingdom, many of them tend to follow or get inspired by their editorial and representational trends. Literature reveals how racialised people appear less frequently and with specific dehumanising contours on the various media outlets, including this semiotic genre, of which examples are 'Women’s Health' and 'Men’s Health' magazines. To understand how hegemonic whiteness is promoted by these lifestyle magazines, this article presents a study of their main covers, employing multimodal critical discourse analysis. Intersectionality theory and decolonial studies inform this analytical approach. Considering a body of literature, through cover participants and semiotic resources altogether, whiteness, racialised sexual objectification, racial privilege, and strategic fitnessist appendix are the main detected discourses. These allow the unveiling of a colonial eye. This chapter ends by raising questions in a discussion and recommending a more careful approach to diversity and media. -

Unraveling the potential of Chondrosia reniformis collagen for tissue engineering scaffolds, with particular insights into chondrogenic differentiation

This study investigated the ability of collagen derived from Chondrosia reniformis to support cell proliferation and chondrogenic differentiation, assessing its suitability for tissue regeneration. Collagen was isolated, preserving its fibrillar structure and glycosylation features, then cross-linked with EDC, genipin, or glutaraldehyde to produce freeze-dried scaffolds. The resulting structures were characterized in terms of physicochemical properties, morphology, degradation, rheology, and cytocompatibility. While all scaffolds showed comparable degradation and rheological behavior, genipin-cross-linked scaffolds exhibited larger pore sizes, whereas glutaraldehyde-cross-linked scaffolds showed higher water uptake. In vitro assays using ATDC5, BJ, and EA.hy926 cell lines demonstrated superior metabolic activity and proliferation on genipin-cross-linked scaffolds. Additionally, human adipose stem cells displayed early chondrogenic differentiation, evidenced by SOX9, ACAN, and COMP expression under basal conditions. These findings highlight the versatility of C. reniformis collagen for biomedical applications, particularly cartilage regeneration. -

PATTERN. Empowering Higher Education Institutions by trainings for researchers on Open and RRI practices
Publicaçãopor Príncipe, PedroOutros Autores: Correia, Antónia; Moura, Paula; Vieira, André; Lagido, CristinaThe EU-funded PATTERN project aims at promoting the practice of Open and Responsible Research and Innovation (Open RRI) by developing and testing trainings for researchers at all stages of their careers. The project has defined 8 main transferable skills on Open RRI: Open Access; FAIR data management; Citizen Science; Research Integrity; Gender, Non-discrimination and Inclusion in research; Dissemination and Exploitation of results; Science communication; Management and Leadership. For each of them, specific training modules are being developed and tested in 14 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and made publicly accessible on the PATTERN platform, which includes Openplato learning tool from OpenAIRE. Moreover, PATTERN will address authorities responsible for researcher training, presenting evidence-based recommendations on educational policies to empower HEIs in contributing to bridge the gap between science and society. This poster will provide an overview of PATTERN methodology, discuss the results of the first year of the project, and highlight the main action from the training roadmap. In particular, it will focus on three aspects: 1. Consolidated knowledge about the existing trainings on Open RRI and learning opportunities for researchers, identifying existing gaps, as the basis for the development of PATTERN training actions. 2. The analysis of European policies focusing on understanding how they contribute to including Open RRI practices in trainings and training materials aimed at researchers. 3. The Training roadmap to be developed and will be co-designed and fine-tuned within PATTERN Consortium, understanding the opportunities from the community (HEIs and RPOs) to use the PATTERN training modules. Establishing the EU-level baseline will then be a basis for further analysis on how the EU approach is embedded at the national level in the countries hosting the pilots. The findings of the two-level policy mapping, in addition to building on the mapping of training, will be a cornerstone for co-creating policy recommendations with and for EU and national authorities and actors in HEIs and RPOs. -

From nano- to macro-scale: nanotechnology approaches for spatially controlled delivery of bioactive factors for bone and cartilage engineering

L.The field of biomaterials has advanced towards the molecular and nanoscale design of bioactive systems for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and drug delivery. Spatial cues are displayed in the 3D extracellular matrix and can include signaling gradients, such as those observed during chemotaxis. Architectures range from the nanometer to the centimeter length scales as exemplified by extracellular matrix fibers, cells and macroscopic shapes. The main focus of this review is the application of a biomimetic approach by the combination of architectural cues, obtained through the application of micro- and nanofabrication techniques, with the ability to sequester and release growth factors and other bioactive agents in a spatiotemporal controlled manner for bone and cartilage engineering. -

A systematic review of value co-creation models for engineering asset management collaborative ecosystems

The authors seek to contribute to moving beyond traditional organization-centric EAM approaches toward systemic, multi-actor value co-creation models. This systematic review aims to investigate existing work on value co-creation across different areas and assess whether these works can be transposed to EAM. To achieve this, a structured, systematic literature review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, using Scopus and Web of Science as information sources. The search combined the keywords “collaborative,” “ecosystem,” “value co-creation,” and “model,” resulting in 72 peer-reviewed articles. Bibliometric analysis was performed using EndNote (version 2025.2), Excel (version 16.110.2), and VOSviewer (version JAVA 1.0), complemented by thematic analysis structured around the three research questions. The results reveal a significant increase in publications after 2021, the predominance of ecosystem and value co-creation concepts, and the existence of fragmented conceptual, governance, and analytical models. The findings confirm a persistent gap that needs to be addressed to properly integrate collaborative ecosystems and enable value co-creation in EAM, providing a structured foundation for developing an integrated ecosystem-based asset management framework in this space. By conducting a structured, systematic literature review and synthesizing conceptual, governance, and analytical models, this research consolidates fragmented knowledge and proposes an integrative perspective that positions value co-creation, multi stakeholder governance, and digital enablement as central mechanisms for enhancing ecosystem performance and sustainability in asset-intensive environments. -

Biomimetic systems for biomarkers detection in osteochondral metastasis

L.; Oliveira, Joaquim M.Osteochondral metastasis, involving both bone and adjacent cartilage, poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its anatomical complexity and the subtle onset of molecular changes. Conventional imaging modalities often fail to detect early-stage lesions, underscoring the need for more sensitive and specific diagnostic tools. In response, biomarker-driven strategies, including protein markers, circulating tumor cells (CTCs), extracellular vesicles (EVs), and noncoding RNAs, have emerged as promising alternatives, yet they remain limited by low abundance, specificity, and clinical validation. This chapter explores the transformative potential of biomimetic systems, engineered platforms that mimic the structural and biochemical characteristics of native osteochondral tissue, to overcome these limitations. We highlight advanced fabrication techniques such as electrospinning and 3D bioprinting, which enable the development of high-surface-area, functionalized scaffolds capable of enhanced biomarker capture and real-time biosensing. Emerging applications include nanorobotic sensors, aptamer-based probes, and integrated platforms that combine diagnostics with therapeutic delivery. By bridging biological fidelity with engineering precision, biomimetic systems are redefining the landscape of metastatic cancer diagnostics. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of these innovations, their clinical relevance, and the future direction toward personalized, minimally invasive, and real-time monitoring of osteotropic cancer spread. -

Metal-Organic Framework functionalized Chitosan/Pectin membranes for solar-driven photo-oxidation and adsorption of arsenic

In this research we propose the assembly of a membrane build up from chitosan/pectin (CHIPEC) composite biopolymer and the UiO-66-NH<inf>2</inf> porous and photo-active metal–organic framework. CHIPEC@UiO-66-NH<inf>2</inf> membrane integrates porosity, adsorptive capacity, and activity to photo-oxidize and adsorb As<sup>III</sup> and As<sup>V</sup> species. Nanometric-sized UiO-66-NH<inf>2</inf> was synthetized and homogeneously distributed within the CHIPEC matrix, achieving a composite membrane with optical physico-chemical and optical properties (band gap of 2.91 eV) suitable to be applied on photooxidation of As<sup>III</sup> and adsorption of As<sup>V</sup>. Under optimal conditions, maximum adsorption capacities (Q<inf>max</inf>) values of 254 and 168 mg g<sup>−1</sup> were reached for As<sup>III</sup> adsorption by MOF and membrane, respectively. Notably, for As<sup>V</sup> adsorption, Q<inf>max</inf> values of 268 and 335 mg g<sup>−1</sup> were reached for powdered and immobilized MOF, respectively. Moreover, the membrane keeps most of its activity for As<sup>V</sup> adsorption when employed in surface and groundwater matrixes. Further, the efficiently of UiO-66-NH<inf>2</inf> to photo-oxidize As<sup>III</sup> to As<sup>V</sup>, subsequently adsorbing the arsenate oxyanions, is improved by a factor of five when is integrated into the polymer. A detailed multi-step mechanism for the arsenic transformation and adsorption in CHIPEC@UiO-66-NH<inf>2</inf> has been proposed on the basis of the anionic exchange at Zr hexa-nuclear clusters and amino groups in the MOF. Overall, MOF-biopolymeric composite has been proved as a straightforward, efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly solution for detoxifying arsenic in surface and underground water. -

Development of simulated ground motion dataset in the Azores Region (Portugal)

To achieve this, a comprehensive database of accelerograms consistent with the seismological characteristics of the region is ideal. However, available databases often lack sufficient records, particularly for scenarios involving large-magnitude, short-distance earthquakes. Synthetic ground motions offer a solution to fill these gaps, providing data for scenarios important to the site hazard that lack adequate recorded accelerograms. These synthetic recordings require rigorous validation through seismological and statistical testing to ensure they are realistic. Given the limited and uneven distribution of ground motion records in the Azores Plateau, despite the presence of several active faults in the region, this study presents the development of a simulated ground motion dataset for the Azores Plateau in Portugal. This research employs a stochastic source-based approach to generate a simulated dataset, incorporating randomisation of input model parameters to account for the aleatory uncertainty in seismic activity. The accuracy of the simulated dataset is verified through a comprehensive validation process. This process confirms the reliability of the dataset, demonstrating that the randomisation effectively captures variance and inter-period correlation observed in real ground motions. This work contributes a robust dataset for advancing seismic hazard analysis and risk assessment in the Azores Plateau. -

SCAPE: report on compliance validation
Publicaçãopor Ferreira, MiguelOutros Autores: Faria, Luís; Hahn, Matthias; Duretec, KresimirThis whitepaper describes the integrated technologies produced in SCAPE and the results of its assessment against the ISO 16363 – a framework for Audit and Certification of Trustworthy Digital Repositories. The work aims to demonstrate that a preservation ecosystem composed of building blocks as the ones developed in SCAPE is able to comply with most of the system-related requirements of the ISO 16363. The SCAPE Preservation Environment (SPE) is composed of a repository system, an execution environment, planning & watch services, preservation control policies, and best practice guidelines and reports. From a total of 108 metrics included in the ISO 16363, the SPE fully supports 69 of them. 31 metrics were considered to be “out of scope” as they refer to organisational issues that cannot be solved by technology alone nor can they be analysed outside the framework of a breathing organisation, leaving 2 metrics to be considered “partially supported” and 6 metrics to be considered “not supported”. This gives an overall compliancy level of roughly 90% (if the organisational oriented metrics are not taken into account). Even though we consider this to be an excellent result, proving and giving guidelines on how it would be possible to have a system compliant with most of the metrics included in ISO 16363, this also enabled us to identify the main weak points of the SCAPE Preservation Environment that should be addressed in the near future. In summary the gaps found were: The ability to manage and maintain contracts or deposit agreements through the repository user interfaces; Support for tracking intellectual property rights; Improve technical documentation, especially on the conversion of Submission Information Packages (SIP) into Archival Information Packages (AIP); The ability to aid the repository manager to perform better risk management. Our goal is to ensure that the SCAPE Preservation Environment fully supports the system-related metrics of the ISO 16363. In order to close the gaps encountered, additional features have been added to the roadmap of the SPE.
