Developing enterprise sponsored virtual communities: the case of a sme’s knowledge community
Publicaçãopor Soares, António LucasOutros Autores: Simões, Dora; Moreira Silva, Manuel; Madureira, RicardoThis paper presents a case in the development of a knowledge community support system in the context of an industrial association group in the construction sector. This system is a result of the Know-Construct project which aims at providing association sponsored SME communities of the construction sector with a sophisticated information management platform and community building tools for knowledge sharing. The paper begins by characterizing the so-called construction industry knowledge community. The Know-Construct system concept and the its general architecture are described, focusing on the semantic resources, in particular the ontologies structure. The final part of the paper depicts the approach to the actual introduction of the system in the community. An action-research approach was planned to obtain research results regarding the social acceptance of semantic resources such as the ontologies and technical classifications used in system. -

Urban Groundwater Processes and Anthropogenic Interactions (Porto Region, NW Portugal)
Publicaçãopor Afonso, Maria JoséOutros Autores: Freitas, Liliana; Marques, José Manuel; Carreira, Paula M.; Pereira, Alcides J.S.C.; Rocha, Fernando et al.Groundwater in fissured rocks is one of the most important reserves of available fresh water, and urbanization applies an extremely complex pressure which puts this natural resource at risk. Two-thirds of Portugal is composed of fissured aquifers. In this context, the Porto urban region is the second biggest metropolitan area in mainland Portugal. In this study, a multidisciplinary approach was developed, using hydrogeological GIS-based mapping and modeling, combining hydrogeochemical, isotopic, and hydrodynamical data. In addition, an urban infiltration potential index (IPI-Urban) was outlined with the combination of several thematic layers. Hydrogeochemical signatures are mainly Cl-Na to Cl-SO4-Na, being dependent on the geographic proximity of this region to the ocean, and on anthropogenic and agricultural contamination processes, namely fertilizers, sewage, as well as animal and human wastes. Isotopic signatures characterize a meteoric origin for groundwater, with shallow flow paths and short residence times. Pumping tests revealed a semi- to confined system, with low long-term well capacities (<1 L/s), low transmissivities (<4 m2/day), and low storage coefficients (<10−2). The IPI-Urban index showed a low groundwater infiltration potential, which was enhanced by urban hydraulic and sanitation features. This study assessed the major hydrogeological processes and their dynamics, therefore, contributing to a better knowledge of sustainable urban groundwater systems in fractured media -

Three New Labdanes Isolated from Eragrostis viscosa
Publicaçãopor Gaspar, Jorge F.Outros Autores: Martins, Célia; Rueff, José; Rueff, JoseOrigem: Repositório Institucional da UNLThree new labdanes with 8 alpha,15-epoxy ring {[}methyl 8 alpha,15-epoxylabdan-16 beta-oate, 8 alpha,15-epoxylabdan-16 beta-ol and 8 alpha,15-epoxy-16-norlabdan-13 beta-ol] and five known compounds {[}8 alpha,15-epoxy-16-norlabdan-13-one, 8 alpha,15-epoxylabdan-16 beta-oic acid, 3 beta-(3 `',4 `'-dihydroxy)-(E)-cinnamoyloxylup-20(29)-ene, 3-(2',3' 4',6'-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyloxy)-beta-sitosterol and 16-acetoxy-8 alpha,15-epoxylabdane] were isolated from toluene and dichloromethane extracts of aerial parts of Eragrostis viscosa. The structures of all the compounds were established based on their spectroscopic data and X-ray diffraction analysis of 8 alpha,15-epoxylabdan-16 beta-ol. It was also studied the genotoxicity of E. viscosa, particularly compounds 16-acetoxy-8 alpha,15-epoxylabdane, 8 alpha,15-epoxy-16-norlabdan-13-one and 8 alpha,15-epoxilabdan-16 beta-ol, using a cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay and the Ames test to assess mutagenicity. Both assays were negative. Cytotoxicity was also analyzed using an MTT assay, and 8 alpha,15-epoxy-16 beta-ol was shown to be the most cytotoxic of the compounds tested. E. viscosa extracts were also tested to determine their antioxidant capacities, peroxide values and total phenolic contents.}} -

The “script” of a new urban layout: mobility, environment and embellishment in Lisbon’s streets (1850-1910)
Publicaçãopor Silva, Álvaro Ferreira daOutros Autores: Sousa, M. LuísaOrigem: Repositório Institucional da UNLThis article is at the crossroads of two scholarly traditions: the history of technology studying urban infrastructures and the history of urban planning. Using the Actor Network Theory’s concept of “script,” it analyzes the strategic role played by the street to overcome nineteenth-century urban problems. The street was simultaneously the epicenter of the “urban question” and the key to its solution. This role explains why urban planning played a unifying part in the agenda of urban improvements, as a response to mobility, environment, and embellishment problems. However, urban planners did not dictate the evolution of Lisbon. This article argues that Lisbon’s transformation was the result of tensions and compromises between different actors (public authorities, technicians, businessmen), and of diverse impulses (sanitary, economic, and emulative). Moreover, it argues that the heterogeneous character of nineteenth-century Lisbon demonstrates the need to zoom in on the street. ANT provides the heuristic framework for understanding these interactions. -

Unbundling and Incumbent Investment in Quality Upgrades and Cost Reduction
Publicaçãopor Vareda, JoãoOrigem: Repositório Institucional da UNLWe study the investment of a telecommunications incumbent in quality and in cost reduction when an entrant can use its network through unbundling of the local loop. We find that unbundling may lower incentives for quality improvements, but raises incentives for cost reduction. Therefore, it is not true that all types of investment are crowded out with unbundling. If the regulator can commit to a socially optimal unbundling price before investment, the incumbent makes both types of investment. In the absence of commitment, the incumbent will not invest, so that unbundling regulation may lower welfare as compared to no regulation. -
