In the south of the Iberian Peninsula, many rivers are intermittent, a state most likely to be exacerbated by climate change, strongly affecting river biota. An additional challenge for native biota in this area is the arrival of new species, frequently aided by humans, and bivalves are particularly at risk. Here we assessed whether the native (Unio delphinus) and invasive (Corbicula fluminea) bivalves differed in habitat use. To address this question, we sampled populations of both species in six isolated permanent pools in the same river during summer in three consecutive years. U. delphinus occurred in all pools, while C. fluminea occurred only in the two most downstream pools. U. delphinus, but not C. fluminea, was found preferentially in patches under riparian vegetation cover. Both species were found in similar sediment types (coarse and fine gravel respectively). Although U. delphinus was present in all pools, recruitment was detected only in 2016, in one pool. We concluded that both species have the potential to compete for space, but a well-developed riparian vegetation cover may provide U. delphinus some advantage against C. fluminea.

Experimental animal models are a valuable tool to study the neurobiology of emotional behavior and mechanisms underlying human affective disorders. Mounting evidence suggests that various aquatic organisms, including both vertebrate (e.g., zebrafish) and invertebrate (e.g., crayfish) species, may be relevant to study animal emotional response and its deficits. Ideally, model organisms of disease should possess considerable genetic and physiological homology to mammals, display robust behavioral and physiological responses to stress, and should be sensitive to a wide range of drugs known to modulate stress and affective behaviors. Here, we summarize recent findings in the field of zebrafish- and crayfish-based tests of stress, anxiety, aggressiveness and social preference, and discuss further perspectives of using these novel model organisms in translational biological psychiatry. Outlining the remaining questions in this field, we also emphasize the need in further development and a wider use of crayfish and zebrafish models to study the pathogenesis of affective disorders.

Both societal progress and the evolution of information and communication technology (ICT) offer communication opportunities and advantages, as well as challenges at various levels. The literature has documented that the increasing presence of technology in family contexts has made it a central element in the management of routines. It should also be noted that, in family, technology can take on some functions, such as carrying out independent activities as a device, or it can serve as a mechanism for socialization and communication. Using a single question, we carried out a qualitative analysis about people’s perception about the use of information and communication technology as a babysitter. Twenty-eight subjects of both sexes participated in the study, ranging from adolescents to young adults without children, to fathers and mothers, all aged between 14 and 60 years of age. Content analysis revealed that parents use technology as a babysitter due, mainly, to their demanding professional lives as well as in consequence of the usefulness of the tool to family organization. Participants were also found the perceive a need for alternatives.

STRATEGY CCUS is a three-year project (2019-2022) funded by the H2020 research and innovation framework of the European Commission. It comprises 17 partners and is coordinated by BRGM (France). STRATEGY CCUS aims to provide realistic strategic plans from 2025 to 2050 for deploying carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) in Southern and Eastern Europe, from a local to a European scale. Eight promising regions, within seven countries are being studied. Plans and roadmaps for these regions will be developed based on economic and environmental drivers, technical potential and social acceptance. The deployment of operational CCUS clusters starts by an appraisal at local and regional level. Available data for each promising region was mapped to indicate the technical potential of CCUS development in each region. Relevant groups of stakeholders were identified and invited to form Regional Stakeholder Committees within each promising region. These committees are working with project partners to consider regional factors and concerns as well as to elaborate scenarios of CCUS deployment in their respective regions to ensure early local participation. In the 3 most promising regions for the deployment of CCUS, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Multiregional Input Output (MRIO) analysis and Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) designs will provide decision-support for the sustainable development of CCUS. Sound insights and a comprehensive diagnosis of the potential local business models associated with the different CCUS options will be provided for each region, as well as estimates for the sensitivity of the business model on storage capacity and injectivity data.

The focus of this research is a qualitative study of mineralogical and chemical changes in plutonic mafic rock samples after exposure to a CO2-rich brine, under supercritical conditions (SC), to clarify the behavior of brine and rock in the initial stages of mineral carbonation. The studied rock consists of a gabbro-anorthosite from the Odivelas massif, in southern Portugal. The sample was exposed to a SC CO2-rich brine (P≈8 MPa, T≈40◦C) for runs of 0, 30 and 90 days. Experiments were conducted in batch mode, ie. with no CO2 flow, and with a proportion of CO2 to brine of 0.226 for 30 days and 0.033 for 90 days. In addition, numerical modeling was applied to complement the experimental observations, reproducing the experimental observations and simulate the chemical behavior for longer times. The chemical analysis of the brine, before and after, the experiment, shows: (i) increase of magnesium (Mg2+), calcium (Ca2+) and silica (SiO2) for the 30 and 90 days runs and (ii) decrease of pH (8.1 to 6.1 and 8.1 to 6.3, respectively). Experimental and numerical results indicate that the rock sample suffered a slight dissolution process with mineralogical/textural readjustments on the external area of the specimens studied. This is thought to mimic the initial dissolution process under early-stage mineral carbonation. After 90 days, apart from halite, there are no significant new mineral phases. However, the elemental association in the EDS maps of carbon and magnesium dissociated from silicon suggests the residual crystallization of magnesite.

Art and Terror in Daniel Silva’s Spy Novel The Kill Artist

    Publicação
    por Lima, Antónia Lima
The importance of Daniel Silva’s past, close to a Portuguese cultural environment, will be relevant to understand the psychological profile of his popular protagonist and central character, Gabriel Allon, a melancholic man haunted by his past, but also someone who is a gifted art restorer, very sensitive to the values of loyalty and fidelity, which the author assumed to have inherited from his Portuguese family. Being a spy and an art expert, Allon seems to conciliate two contradictory sides of the human personality. The connection between Portuguese and American culture, in this writer’s background, could have been responsible for the creation of a character who can be, at the same time, very sensitive and very violent; an assassin who is an Israeli secret agent and the world’s finest restorer of the Old Masters’ paintings. A perfect double who does justice to his creator’s double origin, which contributed to the success of The Kill Artist (2000), where terror is practiced as one of the fine arts by a hero very loyal and faithful to his complex cultural origins, living in a diaspora as the eternal wandering Jew.

Mindset in adults with intellectual disabilities

    Publicação
    por Candeias, Adelinda
Abstract. Mindset refers to a belief system designing how people can learn, think, adapt and behave in society. Previous research shows that a growth mindset empowers learning, competence and flexibility to adapt more than a fixed mindset, but little is known about how functions the mindset of adults with intellectual disabilities. In this chapter we propose to characterize the mindset of adults with intellectual disabilities, in terms of fixed mindset vs growth mindset. Participants were adults with mild intellectual disabilities (ID-MID) (N=25), and adults with moderate intellectual disabilities (ID-MED) (N=21). They answered the questionnaire - Mindset tool for learner with intellectual disability (MTL). Adults with ID-MID presented a more flexible mindset to cope with novelty and barriers and difficulties in the workplace, as well as to cope with social interactions that involves new friendship. Adults with ID-MED demonstrated more fixed beliefs about learning, behavior and competence. These results reinforce the advantage to improve a growth mindset in interventions with adults with intellectual disabilities as a way to promote inclusion.
