Abstract: Although Murilo Mendes' more recent readers have been delving into the study of religion as a constituent factor of his poetics, a more detailed problematization regarding the space occupied by the poet in the national literary panorama of the 20th century is still necessary. Although he is not the only "modernist" writer in our historiography whose poetic production has been profoundly marked by the spiritualist tenor, in the first half of the last century, his ambivalence, whether in the ideological sphere or in the aesthetic proposals, make the author an interesting point outside the curve in front of much of the modernist canon. However, this problematization exceeds the position of the author of Poesia Liberdade and is configured as a broader question about the formation narratives of our literary historiography. The objective of this thesis is to provide some critical reference lines that can serve as a basis for a reading of his work that allow a more attentive approach to his literary production that considers and values what until then had been taken as incongruity, inconstancy or indefiniteness of his poetic proposal. Given this, the study undertaken here is configured through two axes of analysis. At first, I problematize the poet's position in relation to his "modernist" peers, then carry out a comparative reading of his trajectory with the lineage of modern writers brought together by Antoine Compagnon under the denomination of antimoderns and the theory of cultural sociology elaborated by Michael Löwy and Robert Sayre on Romanticism as resistance to the values of capitalist modernity. Finally, I return to the author's religious view related to the essentialist reflection that he developed together with Ismael Nery, in order to demonstrate how the typological conception of christian time underlies much of the author's poetic production. This will be done through a comparative reading between essentialist reflections and theories of literary criticism developed based on christian temporality by Northrop Frye and Erich Auerbach
