In the framework of the environmental impact study conducted for the implementation of an eco-tourism project at Quinta do Carmo (Estremoz), a local detailed geological study was carried out. In this study, implemented by a multidisciplinary team, the “geology team” was responsible for the geological mapping, geomorphological characterization and identification of geological resources. Taking into account that the existing geological maps are in small scale (sheet 6 of the Geological Map of Portugal at 1/200000 scale), or old and partly outdated (sheets 36-B Estremoz and 36-D Redondo of the Geological Map of Portugal at 1/50000 scale), it was chosen to make a new geological map of the whole study area at scale 1/10000. This cartography allowed the review of the lithostratigraphy of the area, the interpretation of the structure and geomorphology of the region, the identification of mineral occurrences and the identification of landscape and geological heritage points of interest.
