As práticas tauromáquicas em geral e a corrida de touros de estirpe andaluza em particular têm beneficiado de um intenso interesse por parte dos antropólogos, não só em virtude do seu carácter de excepção cultural no espaço europeu – uma Europa do Sul taurina em contraste com as Europas do Norte e de Leste sem essa tradição, como pela presença do sangue e da morte pública dum animal num mundo em que esses dois elementos sensoriais foram sistematicamente censurados. Os estudos que vieram à luz no último meio-século, ao sublinhar facetas distintas desses rituais, ao propôr interpretações diferentes e por vezes incompatíveis, demonstraram a sua extraordinária polissemia. O autor examina algumas das principais teses antropológicas e tenta responder à pergunta central: o ritual tauromáquico andaluz que exige a morte do touro na arena corresponde a um sacrifício em sentido estrito, ou ilustra outro tipo de manifestações culturais? Abstract Taurine practices, and those of Andaluzian descent in particular have exerted on Anthropologists an amazing attraction. One reason for this may be found in its character as a cultural exception in the European cultural space – a taurine Southern Europe contrasting with a Northern and Eastern Europe which don’t have such traditions. But it is certainly the presence of blood and of the public death of an animal, in a cultural context from which these events have been banned, that makes the bullfighting traditions a special study case. During the last half-century number of studies appeared, underlining different facets and proposing distinct, often incompatible, anthropological interpretations of these rituals, evidencing their high degree of polyssemy. The author reviews some of the most important theses and suggests an answer to the central question: is the Andaluzian bullfighting ritual, requiring the bull’s death in the arena, a sacrifice in the strict sense of the concept, or does it correspond to another kind of cultural items?
