Preventing child sexual abuse at preschool age: What programs, what strategies

With short and long-term impacts, child sexual abuse is a severe public health problem of shared responsibility that, due to lack of knowledge, lack of information or preconceptions, we dissipate opportunities to prevent. That said, the general aim of this article is to identify interventions and strategies from different sexual abuse prevention programs in preschool children that professionals can use. From the PubMed, BMC Public Health, Europe PMC and ResearchGate databases, we selected eight studies that met the aim of this study. Data analysis led to categorising three types of programs envisioned for intervention with children, parents, and educators. In the programs, approaches for children focus on the theme of healthy and safe relationships, for parents to raise awareness and develop strategies for effective communication with their children, and for educators focused on the training and use of pedagogical resources to identify abuse. The conclusions demonstrated that the issue involves behaviours considered to be intimate within families and that these abuses are carried out regardless of socioeconomic status, age, religion and/or sexual orientation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to learn and share knowledge to help protect children and promote healthier, more socially capable adults. Likewise, alongside these recipients, we see the need to explore the role of other actors in prevention, disseminate warning signs in communities, demystify behaviors and the need for public awareness and the responsibility that we all have regarding child sexual abuse.

Com impactos a curto e longo prazo, o abuso sexual infantil é um problema sério de saúde pública, de responsabilidade partilhada que, por desconhecimento, falta de informação ou pré-conceitos dissipamos oportunidades de prevenir. Posto isto, o objetivo geral deste artigo é identificar intervenções e estratégias dos diferentes programas de prevenção de abuso sexual, em crianças com idades pré-escolares, que possam ser utilizadas por profissionais. A partir das bases de dados PubMed, BMC Public Health, Europe PMC e ResearchGate selecionamos 8 estudos que cumpriam o objetivo deste estudo. A análise dos dados levou à categorização de 3 tipologias de programas, perspetivados na intervenção com crianças, pais e educadores. Nos programas, as abordagens para crianças incidem na temática das relações saudáveis e seguras; para pais na consciencialização e desenvolvimento de estratégias com vista à comunicação eficaz com os filhos; para educadores na formação e uso de recursos pedagógicos para a identificação de abusos. As conclusões, demostraram que a temática envolve comportamentos considerados do foro íntimo das famílias e, estes abusos são exercidos, independentemente, da condição socioeconómica, idade, orientação religiosa e/ou sexual, por isso, urge aprender e partilhar conhecimento de forma a ajudar a proteger as crianças e promover adultos mais saudáveis e capazes socialmente. Igualmente, a par destes destinatários, constatámos a necessidade de explorar o papel de outros intervenientes na prevenção, disseminar nas comunidades os sinais de alerta, desmistificar comportamentos e a necessidade de consciencialização pública e, responsabilidade que todos nós temos sobre o abuso sexual infantil.
