Artistic and specialist music education in Portugal in the 20th Century and the historical evolution of the subject Formação Musical

The musical pedagogical activity undertaken in Portugal during the 20th century may be divided into different stages of development, which Vasconcelos (2010) refers to as: sensitivity education (1901–1919); European influence (1919–1930); technical education (1930–1971); pedagogical experience (1971–1983); and insertion and expansion (1983–2000). This article aims to describe the main elements of these stages, identifying the subjects that preceded the subject of Formação Musical (Musical Training) in artistic and specialist music courses (Carneiro, 2022). From legislation and many other bibliographical references, we gain an understanding of the main aspects that marked the pedagogical sense present in Portugal in the course of the 20th century and its influence on pedagogical activities in the subjects that preceded the subject Formação Musical.

A atividade musical de caráter pedagógico realizada em Portugal, durante o século XX, é disposta em diferentes fases de desenvolvimento a que Vasconcelos (2010) trata por: educação da sensibilidade (1901–1919); influência europeia (1919–1930); ensino técnico (1930–1971); experiência pedagógica (1971–1983) e inserção e expansão (1983–2000). O presente artigo procura expor os principais elementos caraterizadores dessas fases de desenvolvimento, destacando as disciplinas que precederam a, ainda hoje denominada disciplina de Formação Musical, ministrada nos cursos artísticos especializados de música (Carneiro, 2022). A partir de diplomas legislativos e de diversas referências bibliográficas publicadas foi possível compreender os principais aspetos que, ao longo do século XX, marcaram o pensamento pedagógico vigente em Portugal, assim como a influência que se fez sentir nas práticas musicais de natureza pedagógica desenvolvidas nas disciplinas que precederam a já referida disciplina de Formação Musical.
