Dear reader, In a world as constantly and rapidly changing as the one we live in, science and research play a pivotal role in transforming individuals, both personally and professionally, and consequently in enhancing the status of professions. Although they tend to be associated mainly with academic circles, science and research are much more than mere academic tools; they represent an attitude towards knowledge – a way of thinking, questioning and moving forward – operating across multiple layers of human and professional development, with enormous transformative power. Given the foundations on which they are based, engagement with research practices fosters critical thinking, curiosity and intellectual autonomy in individuals, transforming and developing skills such as resilience, organisation, problem-solving ability and creativity, contributing to a deep sense of personal satisfaction. In the professional sphere, science and research contribute to constant updating, evidence-based practice, excellence and innovation in daily practice, as well as to professional recognition and prestige. If this is the outcome for the individual, the development of each individual within the collective that makes up a profession takes this to an even more significant level. But, more importantly, it does not stop there: science and research contribute to the advancement of knowledge across a wide range of professions, redefining practices and driving their evolution as professions, with clear benefits for the field of work and for society as a whole. They also contribute to strengthening professional identity, since by contributing to research, professionals shape and redefine the role and boundaries of their field of practice. Furthermore, they contribute to the development of collaborative networks by promoting partnerships between institutions, countries or specialisms that foster exchange and the collective construction of knowledge. The implementation of a culture in which science and research are among the pillars of the profession tends to accelerate the evolution of the professions involved, enhancing gains in social legitimacy and institutional strength. This is one of the aims of Radiações Journal: to contribute to the establishment of science and research as a pillar in the fields of Radiology, Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine, thereby helping to disseminate robust scientific output that enables the evolution of our professions. Caro leitor, Num mundo em constante e rápida evolução como o que vivemos, a ciência e a investigação assumem um papel preponderante na transformação dos indivíduos, quer do ponto de vista pessoal, quer profissional e consequentemente na valorização das profissões. Embora com tendência a serem maioritariamente associadas aos meios académicos, a ciência e a investigação são muito mais do que uma mera ferramenta académica, representam uma atitude em relação ao conhecimento – forma de pensar, questionar e de avançar – atuando em múltiplas camadas do desenvolvimento humano e profissional, com um poder transformador enorme. Tendo conta as raízes em que assenta, o envolvimento com práticas de investigação estimula nos indivíduos o pensamento crítico, a curiosidade e a autonomia intelectual, transformando e desenvolvendo no individuo competências como a resiliência, a organização, a capacidade para resolver problemas e a criatividade, contribuindo para um profundo sentido de satisfação pessoal. Já no âmbito profissional a ciência e a investigação contribuem para uma atualização constante, uma prática baseada na evidência, a excelência e a inovação na prática diária, bem como para a valorização profissional e prestígio. Se para o individuo temos este resultado, o desenvolvimento de cada individuo no conjunto que compõem cada profissão leva isto para um patamar ainda mais relevante. Mas, ainda mais importante, é que não fica por aqui, a ciência e a investigação contribuem para o avanço na área do conhecimento nas mais diversas profissões, redefinindo práticas e potenciando a sua evolução enquanto profissão com benefícios claros para a área de atuação e para sociedade em geral. Contribuem também para o fortalecimento da identidade profissional, uma vez que ao contribuírem com investigação, os profissionais moldam e redefinem o papel e os limites da sua área de atuação. E ainda, contribuem para o desenvolvimento de redes colaborativas, através da promoção de parcerias entre instituições, países ou especialidades que fomentam o intercâmbio e a construção coletiva do conhecimento. A implementação de uma cultura em que ciência e investigação são um dos pilares da profissão tende a acelerar a evolução das profissões que o fazem, potenciando ganhos na legitimidade social e força institucional. Este é um dos propósitos da Revista Radiações, contribuir para a implementação da ciência e investigação como pilar nas áreas da Radiologia, Radioterapia e Medicina Nuclear, contribuindo para a divulgação de uma produção científica robusta que permita a evolução das nossas profissões.
